Dodge City Community is always looking to add opportunities for our students, and one of the latest opportunities for future Conquistadors is growing the spirit squad program with the addition of a dance team.
Under the guidance of Head Spirit Squad Coach,
Brett Rojas, the Conqs has added a dance team to the spirit squad program along with cheer. With the addition of dance comes the addition of a coach as former Conq,
Decovyn Gaines, returns to Dodge City to help lead the revamped Conq dance team. Gaines will serve as an assistant coach for the spirit squad and lead the dance team. The dance team will perform on gamedays along with the cheer team, and will also look to compete at the NDA
"I'm incredibly excited to welcome Coach Decovyn this year and celebrate the return of the Dodge City Community College dance team! His connection to the program as a member of the original team makes this moment even more special. Coming back to rebuild it speaks volumes about his Conq Nation pride," said Rojas. "Bringing dance back to Conq Athletics will elevate the game day atmosphere and expand our presence in the community. Be sure to watch for the dance team at community service events, game days, and special appearances. This also adds another strong support system as we travel to NCA (National Cheerleaders Association) & NDA (National Dance Alliance) College Nationals in April."
Gaines spent the past year in the Dodge City community teaching the youth of the area and leading a hip-hop dance group, which competed and earned several award-winning performances. The Houston, Texas native attended Dodge City Community College from 2014-16, where he was part of the DC3 dance team and played football.
"The opportunity to build something from the ground up is what excites me the most. Being able to bring my experience back to a place that helped shape me, while creating new opportunities for dancers in this community, means everything. I'm excited to develop talent, build a strong culture, and compete at a high level," said Gaines.
After his time at DC3, Gaines returned to Houston to continue his dance career and competed and performed with the SoReal Dance Studio for eight years. During his time competing in hip-hop competitions with SoReal Dance Studio he earned three World of Dance championships.
"My goal is to build a culture of discipline, confidence, and competitiveness within the program. I want our dancers to grow not only technically, but as performers and leaders who represent Dodge City at a high level alongside an already championship-caliber spirit program," said Gaines.
