Conqs Fall in Final Home Game

Anthony Watkins had 120 rushing yards on the day.
Box Score The Dodge City Community College football team was looking for a way to bounce back after a rough road game last Saturday, but the task would be big against the #4 Hutchinson Blue Dragons. In the end the game was centered around big plays and although the Conqs got an impressive one from Anthony Watkins, Hutchinson had two defensive touchdowns and an 81 yard run that pushed them past the Conqs by a 45 to 7 score.

The game got off to a good start for the Conqs as they forced a three and out after Hutch took the ball to open the game. The Dodge City offense could not move the ball either and they were also forced to punt after three plays. Devonta Guillory pinned the Dragons deep in their own territory by downing a punt at the one yard line. After an offside penalty on the Conqs moved the ball away from the goal line, Hutchinson moved out to the 19 yard line on three plays. The fourth play of the drive saw the first truly big play of the game as Dezmon Jackson broke an 81 yard touchdown run to put the Dragons up 7-0. The score stayed the same for much of the first quarter as each defense was playing tough and making yards hard to come by. With just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter Dodge City go the ball back, but fumbled on their first offensive possession and the Dragons took the recovery 20 yards to put them up 14-0. That is how the first quarter would end.

The second quarter was dominated by defenses as the Conqs struggled to move the ball at all against a stout Hutch front four, but the Dragons were also not able to find the end zone against Dodge as the Conq defense came up with big plays when they needed them. With just under six minutes remaining in the first half Jackson struck again for Hutch as he scored on a 24 yard run to cap off a short drive that actually started in Dodge City territory following a short punt. That would put the Dragons up 21-0, which is the lead they would take into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter was not kind to the Conqs as Hutch capitalized on their first possession of the half when Mason Schucker found Jaylen Erwin behind the Conq defense for a 23 yard pass with 10:45 on the clock. Just 27 second later Montgomery struck again as he intercepted Drew Harris and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown. The back to back scores put Hutch up 35-0 on the Conqs. The Conqs were not about to give up as Anthony Watkins broke a big run late in the third quarter. He broke a couple of tackles and then was in the open an sprinted 61 yards to the end zone giving Dodge their first score of the day and making the score 35-7.

The Conqs could not find the end zone again in the fourth quarter although they twice drove the ball deep into Hutchinson territory. The Dragons got a 40 yard field goal after taking over at the Dodge City 28 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game. Finally Hutch found the end zone again when Drake Bolus scored on a four yard run that capped the longest scoring drive in measure of time of the day for either team. That score put the Dragons up 45-7 which is how the game would end.

For the Conqs Watkins had a big day as he rushed for 120 yards on 22 carries, unfortunately he was the only Conq that had positive rushing yards on the day. Harris threw for 138 yard and Terrell Warner had three receptions for 76 yards to lead Dodge City. The loss moves the Conqs record to 3-6 on the year. They will be back in action next Saturday as they travel to Highland Community College for a 1:00pm game.
