Finish!! Teams that finish games typically have a high rate of success in coming out on top, and the Dodge City football team has proved that over the past three weeks, they have won three straight games, all with big plays in the fourth quarter.
The latest big play an 86-yard punt return with 1:22 remaining by
Sherrod Lay, helped the Conquistadors, for the first time since 2005, knock off a top-five-ranked team, beating #5 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Oklahoma, 28-21. The win is the third straight for the Conqs, moving them to 4-2 on the season.
The Conqs looked primed to perhaps get on the board early, taking their first drive down the field to just outside the red zone, but a turnover spoiled the solid drive. Both teams were unable to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter and it took until the 10:05 mark in the second to see the first points as NEO connected on a touchdown pass. NEO forced another Conqs turnover shortly after their score and had a short field, leading to a field goal try that the Norsemen missed; but with 1:45 left before halftime, NEO capped another drive with a 29-yard touchdown run, giving them a 14-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Conqs started to mount another drive, but with 10:36 left in the third quarter, they appeared to possibly fumble the ball on a catch, and NEO scooped it, returning it for a touchdown. Upon review, the call was overturned to an incomplete pass, and the Conqs then used a fake punt, busting off a 30-yard run by
Carsen Patu to keep the drive alive. With 7:02 remaining in the third, the Conqs capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass from
Tim Carpenter to
Omarion Lewis. NEO countered on their next drive, matching the Conqs score, and after three quarters, NEO led 21-7.
The fourth quarter for the third straight week belonged to the Conqs as they put together another 21-0 fourth quarter for the second straight week. After another fourth-down conversion, the Conqs found the end zone on a three-yard touchdown run by Patu to trail 21-14. Another big play came with 7:10 left in the contest as Carpenter hit Lewis across the middle who broke loose for a 90-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21-21. Each team would force each other to punt, and with 1:22 left, the Conqs took their first lead after
Sherrod Lay took a punt back 86 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The Conqs defense stood stout down the stretch as NEO mounted a drive but stalled out at the Conqs 21-yard line to end the contest 28-21. The 21-0 fourth quarter makes it 48 unanswered points in the fourth quarter by the Conqs over the last three games.
Conqs totaled 337 yards in the contest, averaging five yards per play. Carpenter went 10-for-24 for 202 yards and two touchdowns, while Lewis caught both touchdowns on eight receptions for 184 yards.
Joshua Taylor ran for 83 yards on 25 carries.
Defensively,
Greg Wardlaw tallied 11 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss, while
Jabrae Shaw added eight tackles.
Willie Fletcher had a six-tackle day with two sacks and two tackles for loss, while
Amarius Perdue added six tackles and a ½ sack.
Conqs who spoiled homecoming for NEO will host their homecoming for the next contest as they are back home against Ellsworth on Saturday, October 10
th for a noon kick.
