For the second and third time this year, a Dodge City football player has not only earned KJCCC Player of the Week honors but also NJCAA Player of the Week honors.
Omarion Lewis and
Sherrod Lay each picked up conference Player of the Week honors earlier in the week and then both got the nod for NJCAA Division I Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively.
The Conquistadors took down #5 NEO, 28-21, last week to move to 4-2 on the season and the performance of Lewis and Lay both stood out in the contest.
Lewis had his best game as a
Conq, grabbing eight passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He scored the first points of the day for the
Conqs and caught the game-tying touchdown, a 90-yard catch-and-run. This two-touchdown performance is his third game this season with two touchdown catches, and his second 100+ yard game, while he has four games with 80+ yards receiving. He leads the conference in receptions (34), receiving yards (566), yards per game (94.3), and receiving touchdowns (7), while ranking third in yards per catch (16.6).
Lay put the
Conqs ahead for the first time on the day after the defense forced an NEO punt, returning it 86 yards for a touchdown with 1:22 remaining. His special teams play marks the third straight week the
Conqs had a scoring play or play that lead to a score from the special teams unit.
With honors for both Lewis and Lay it marks now five times this year that a Conq athlete has earned national athlete of the week recognition from the NJCAA. Fellow football player,
Jahtavious Gaines earned NJCAA DI Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the season, while Josue Vega picked up the NJCAA Runner of the Week for men's cross country and Leonardo Acquarone earned the NJCAA DI Goalkeeper of the Week for men's soccer.
Conqs football is back home to continue the season on Saturday, October 10
th, hosting Ellsworth for a noon kickoff.
