Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - On Dodge City Community College's homecoming, the Conquistador football team was able to hold on to take down Fort Scott Community College by a score of 36-29 on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback
Caden Walters led the offense, going 13-for-23 on the day passing and throwing for 239 yards and five touchdowns.
Both
Rodney Murphy and
Tyler Minor ran for over 75 yards with Murphy collecting 77 yards and Minor collecting 76.
Things were quiet for a lot of the first quarter until Walters connected with
Braxton Haley for a 19 yard pass to take a 7-0 lead with 4:26 left in the first quarter.
Fort Scott fired back on their very next drive as Darious Abrams broke out a 27 yard run to reach the end zone and tie the game at seven.
Early in the second quarter, Walters collected his second touchdown pass of the day as he found
Anthony Watkins for a 29 yard touchdown pass. The Conqs then tried a fake field goal, but were stuffed at the goal line to take a 13-7 lead.
On the Conqs very next drive, Walters connected with Minor for 66 yards to extedn the lead to 19-7 after a two-point conversion was failed.
With 2:26 left in the first half, Fort Scott came back with a 25 yard touchdown pass to Marcus Stepps to cut the lead to 19-14.Â
On the very next play, Walters found
AJ Morton wide open to push the lead back to 26-14 after an extra point by
Devonta Guillory.Â
In the second half, Fort Scott was able to connect on a 33 yard field goal to cut the lead to 26-17, but Dodge City fired right back with another touchdown pass, this time from Walters to
Caleb Mills for 18 yards to take a 33-17 lead with 1:19 left in the third quarter.
With 28 seconds left, in the third, the Greyhounds added another touchdown, but their two-point conversion failed, cutting the lead to 33-23.
After a slow start to the fourth quarter, Dodge City was able to get within field goal range as Guillory nailed a 27 yard field goal to push the lead to 36-23.
Fort Scott scored again with 3:10 left in the game, but was unable to recover the onside kick. Dodge City ran the clock down, but gave the ball back to the Greyhounds with six seconds left. Fort Scott then ran a play with a lot of laterals but eventually were tackled, giving Dodge City the 36-29 win.
The Conqs move to 4-4 on the year and look to next weekend as they travel to Garden City for a 7 p.m., kickoff.
