Frazier walk-off, two-run single caps Conq sweep of Garden City

DC3's Kayla Frazier makes a back-handed stop at shortstop during the Conqs' sweep of Garden City on Wednesday in Dodge City.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Standing at the plate with two outs in the seventh, runners on second and third and Dodge City down 5-4 to Garden City, Conquistador freshman Kayla Frazier was doing her best to control her nerves.

"I couldn't stop shaking," Frazier said.

But the DC3 shortstop controlled those nerves long enough to line a ball that tipped off the top of the leaping Broncbuster shortstop's glove to score two and give the Conqs a 6-5 victory Wednesday to complete the doubleheader sweep (DC3 won game one, 8-3).

It capped a five-run bottom of the seventh that saw the Conqs (17-19 overall, 9-11 KJCCC) rally all the way back from a 5-1 deficit, highlighted by Frazier's two-run single and a crucial three-run home run by Candace Bollig.

"Thank goodness Candace's ball got out of here and then Kayla saved the best for last," DC3 coach Howie Smith said. "It had some top spin on it and it just tipped off of Jankiewicz's (the shortstop's) glove. ... I was going to try and score Baylee (Rial) (from second) no matter what because the worst-case scenario was we go to extra innings. I was going to take a gamble.

"This group is just business like. We don't get too high or too low. That's just the way we've been."

Trailing 5-1 entering the seventh, DC3 got a lead-off single from Marina Kelly to start the rally. Heather Amen followed by hitting a sharp ground ball that bounced up on the Garden City (8-34, 0-20) shortstop for an error to put runners on first and second.

Following a pop out, Bollig blasted a ball over the fence to left-center field to cut the Conquistador deficit to 5-4. It was her second home run of the day, eighth of the season and capped a 5-for-5, 6-RBI performance for the sophomore.

Kaylie Schoendaller was hit by a pitch after the home run and Sabrina Romero entered to pinch run. After a fly out by the Conqs, Baylee Rial drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Eventually the runners made it to second and third with Frazier at the plate.

On a 3-1 count, Frazier lined the ball just out of the reach of the Garden City shortstop to give the Conqs the win.

Frazier finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, Bollig was 3-for-3 in game two with a home run and four RBI while Hailey Collins - who was playing her first games of the season Wednesday after recovering from a preseason injury - went 2-for-4.

Kim Herron picked up the win, going the distance and giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

In the first game Wednesday, the Conqs' Kelly led off the game with a home run that led to a three-run first inning. The Conqs scored two more in the second and another in the third to build a 6-1 lead and held on for the 8-3 victory.

Taylor Menard finished 3-for-4 in the first game with a run and Bollig was 2-for-2 with a home run, triple, two RBI and three runs.

Herron also got the win in game one, going the distance on just 71 pitches and giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

The wins keep Dodge City in the fourth spot in the KJCCC with six games left. The Conquistadors can't take the No. 3 spot as they are six games back of Colby with six games left and the Trojans have the tiebreaker, however, they are trying to hold off Seward for the No. 4 spot as the Saints are a game back of DC3 (the Conqs do own the tiebreaker over Seward).

DC3 returns to action Friday when it travels to take on Pratt.
