Howie
Smith served as Head Coach of Dodge City Community College softball program for 32 years and work in the athletic department for 37 years.  He finishes with 749 career wins, which includes three KJCCC conference championships, two Region VI Championships and one West Sub-Regional Championship. He also has four KJCCC Conference Runner-up finishes, two Region VI Runner-up finishes, and two trips to the NJCAA Softball World Series which included a fourth place finish at the 2000 World Series.

Smith has been named KJCCC Coach of the Year four times in his career and in 2000 along with his assistant coach was named the NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year and they were a finalist for National Coaching Staff of the Year. 

In the summer of 2014, Smith was selected as one of three Assistant Coaches for the All-Star Team. In 2015, Smith was named Head Coach of the Fastpitch All-Star Team that competed in the Canadian Open International Tournament in Surrey, British Columbia Canada and helped lead that team to a 5th place finish, the highest ever for this squad.

Smith has also been the NFCA West Region Director for the All-American and Coaching Staff of the Year Committees. Smith also has the Chairperson for the NFCA Lead-off Classic and held that position for 12 years.

The softball program has also produced 40 Academic All-Americans. While at DC3, Smith has had 92 player receive All-Conference recognition, 52 players receive All-Region honors and eight players receive All-American recognition.  At the 2000 World Series, Dodge City had one player (NJCAA) named to the All-Tournament Team.

Smith has one daughter, Chantel, who is a special education teacher in the Wichita School District. She is married to Smith's son-in-law Austin and together they have a daughter named Madelynn.
