Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College softball team got a pair of strong performances in the circle from
Kim Herron and
Mia Trujillo, but couldn't give them the run support they needed as the Conquistadors were blanked twice by Colby, 1-0 and 3-0, Wednesday at Legends Park.
The Conquistadors (13-15, 5-9) didn't give up an earned run on the day - and despite having just four hits - had several opportunities to score runs but couldn't find the clutch hit to give DC3 momentum and put pressure on Colby (28-8, 10-2).
"
I keep preaching to the kids that if we pitch and play defense, it will give us an opportunity to win," DC3 coach Howie Smith said. "You saw that today. If we came up with a couple of base hits we may win these games. ... We are close."
In game one the Conqs had opportunities early in the contest by getting a player on to start the inning. However, twice DC3 popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt and the Conq runners were eventually left stranded. The lone run of the first game came in the third inning when on a Hannah Charlton single, DC3 left fielder
Baylee Rial threw a ball right on target to home, but as DC3 catcher
Kaylie Schoendaller went to make the swipe tag - the ball came loose and allowed the Trojans to take the 1-0 advantage.
Herron took the tough loss in the first game, going the distance and giving up one run (unearned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. She also had one of the Conqs' two hits (
Taylor Menard had the other).
Kylee Burnside got the win, tossing a two-hit shutout to improve her record to 10-2.
In the second game, DC3 again a few chances to make some noise - particularly once with the bases loaded and just one out - but couldn't find a way to scratch a run across.
Colby scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning - with the first coming on a DC3 error while the final two came on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
DC3's Trujillo kept the Conqs in it, but picked up the loss - going the distance and giving up three runs (none earned) on four hits with a strikeout and two walks (both scored in the fourth inning).
Herron had one of DC3's two hits with a double off the left field wall in the second inning while
Candace Bollig had the other Conq hit.
"Sooner or later we will get this figured out," Smith said. "I'm disappointed that we got beat again, but I'm proud of the way the kids competed all day. I thought we had some quality at-bats - like we did against Butler - but we just weren't able to square it up and get those timely hits."Abby Martin got the win Colby in game two, going five shutout innings, while Mara Nash got the save.
The Conqs return to action 1 p.m. Saturday when they host Seward County at Legends Park.
