Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- With the bases loaded, one out, the No. 2 and No. 3 hitters coming up and trailing Pratt 10-9 in the bottom of the seventh, the Dodge City Community College softball team looked like it was going to overcome six errors and take game two Thursday and sweep the doubleheader from the Beavers.
But the same magic that happened in game one in a come-from-behind 7-5 victory didn't occur in game two as the Conquistadors popped out twice to end the game and split with Pratt at Legends Park.
DC3 committed 11 errors in the doubleheader (five in the first game, six in the second game) - leading to 11 of the 15 runs allowed Thursday to be unearned.
"That's probably the worst we've played defensively all year," DC3 coach
Howie Smith said. "We tried to work on it (Wednesday) that pitching and defense will keep us in a game even if we are struggling at the plate. ... I have no clue how many errors we had today and I probably don't want to know. It just wasn't a good day of softball defensively. ... It was a lot of routine plays too, which is what really upset me."
In the second game the lead changed six times with DC3 (13-11 overall, 5-5 KJCCC) taking its final lead in the bottom of the fifth on a
Candace Bollig RBI single to cap a three-run inning to make it 9-8 Conquistadors.
The lead didn't last long, however, as Pratt (9-15-1, 3-5) scored two in the top of the sixth to take a 10-9 advantage.
After being held in check in the sixth, the Conqs got a one-out walk from
Sabrina Romero and a double by
Heather Amen to put runners on second and third. Pratt intentionally walked Bollig to bring up
Baylee Rial, who was the hero in game one with four RBI.
But Pratt was able to get Rial and
Taylor Menard to pop up in the infield to end the game.
Bollig was 2-for-3 in the game with a double, two RBI and a stolen base and Amen went 2-for-2 with a triple, double, RBI and run.
Kim Herron picked up the loss in relief, giving up two unearned runs on three hits with one strikeout.
Hannah Feagler got the start for DC3, going five innings and giving up eight runs (three earned) on 10 hits with one strikeout.
Kendra Houston paced Pratt at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI while Bailey Bryson went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Caitlin Rudolph got the win in relief, going the final three innings and giving up no runs and two hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
In the first game, DC3 trailed 2-0 heading into the fifth when a Rial two-run single tied the game. Menard followed with an RBI double that she eventually scored on after back-to-back throwing errors by the Beavers to give DC3 a 4-2 advantage.
But a pair of DC3 errors in the sixth inning allowed three Pratt runs to score to give the Beavers a 5-4 advantage.
However, in the bottom of the inning Rial came up clutch again with a two-run single to give the Conqs a 6-5 lead.
Marina Kelly followed with an RBI single to make it 7-5 and DC3 held on for the win.
Rial finished 2-for-4 with four RBI for the Conqs, Bollig was 2-for-2 with two doubles and was hit with a pitch twice and Menard went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Herron got the win, going the distance and giving up five runs (one earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Emily Lucas took the loss for Pratt in relief, going an inning and giving up two runs on four hits with a strikeout.
Houston went 2-for-4 with a triple and double for the Beavers while Katie Schrag was 2-for-4 with a home run.
The Conqs travel to take on Butler 2 p.m. Saturday.
