Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Wrapping up a busy two weeks, the Dodge City Community College softball team was held to one run while being swept by Barton Community College, 5-0 and 14-1, Friday at Legends Field.
The Conquistadors (10-10 overall, 2-4 KJCCC) were held to eight hits and their only run against Barton (28-2, 5-1) came in the bottom of the fourth inning of game two on a
Kaylie Schoendaller home run.
Playing 16 games in the last 15 games and having only 13 players dressed due to injury, DC3 coach
Howie Smith said the mental fatigue is definitely showing and having eight days until the Conqs' next game is just what the team needs.
"Our mentality going into the box just isn't very good right now," Smith said. "They'll have these five days off after who knows how many games in the last few weeks. We don't really have subs to let these kids rest a little. They just need to get away for these five days. I told them, don't even worry about softball and go do something else."
In the first game it was
Kim Herron keeping the Conqs within striking distance as the freshman from Shawnee, Okla., gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
"I thought that was as good a game as Kim has pitched all year," Smith said. "Facing a team that is 26-2 and puts up runs like they do, she only gave up a few earned runs."
But the Conqs had trouble against Barton ace Madison Didion as the freshman gave up just three hits with 14 strikeouts (including striking out the first seven batters she faced) and one walk.
Herron,
Taylor Menard and
Marina Kelly were the only DC3 players with hits.
In the second game, Barton's first six hitters of the game reached base and the Cougars eventually scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to the 14-1 win.
Candace Bollig went 2-for-3 to lead DC3 at the plate to go along with Schoendaller's home run.
Taryn Garza and
Baylee Rial also each had hits for the Conqs.
Lindsey Lemmon got the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits as she did not record an out.
Posegate got the win, going the distance in the run-rule shortened game and giving up a run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. She was also 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run (she also homered in the first game) and five RBI.Â
Barton finished with 17 hits in the second game.
DC3 returns to action March 19 when it travels to take on Garden City.
