Conqs rally in each game to take two from Northeastern

DC3's Kim Herron throws a pitch against Northeastern during game one Sunday in Dodge City.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College softball team found itself behind in both contests against Northeastern Junior College, but found a way to rally and sweep the doubleheader from the Plainswomen, 5-4 and 13-5, Sunday at Legends Park.

The second game proved the bigger hill to climb for the Conquistadors (4-0) as it trailed 5-0 in the first inning without recording an out before DC3 reliever Lindsey Lemmon got the Conqs out of the jam.

"When they came in that inning I told them, 'We have 21 outs to play with. Lets just start chipping away and not try to get it all back at once,'" DC3 coach Howie Smith said.

DC3 was held scoreless for the first two innings before Northeastern pitcher Riley Faris hit Heather Amen and Candace Bollig to start the third. A Kim Herron RBI single two batters later followed by a Taryn Garza RBI on a fielder's choice cut the DC3 deficit to 5-2.

That's when Kayla Frazier ripped a two-run double to right-center field to slice the Northeastern (1-10) lead to 5-4. Two batters later Kaylie Schoendaller hit a game-tying RBI single to make it 5-5 heading into the fourth.

The Conqs blew it open from there, scoring four runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to run-rule the Plainswomen.

Schoendaller finished 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Conqs, Marina Kelly was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs and Herron, Baylee Rial, and Taylor Menard had two hits apiece.

Lemmon shut down Northeastern in the circle, giving up just three hits in five innings of work.

"I can't say enough about the job Lindsey Lemmon did," Smith said. "You come in down 5-0 with no outs, a lot of kids would think, 'Great, throw me in during trash time.' But she kept us in it. ... Maybe this will be a role we can use her in because we are looking for closers and middle relievers."

In the first game, DC3 trailed 3-1 heading to the bottom of the third inning after Northeastern put three up in the top of the frame.

The Conqs didn't trail long, however, as in that third inning Herron and Garza both smacked RBI singles to tie the game, 3-3.

The Conqs took the lead for good in the fifth when Garza hit a go-ahead RBI triple followed by an RBI single from Kelly to make it 5-3 DC3.

Herron did the rest in the circle, holding off a Plainswomen rally in the seventh to pick up the complete-game win to move to 3-0 on the season. She gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Garza finished 2-for-3 with the triple and two RBI, Herron was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs while Kelly was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.

DC3 plays its first road games of the season when it travels to take on Western Texas in a doubleheader Thursday.
