Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Leading up to Sunday's season-opening doubleheader against Hutchinson, Dodge City Community College coach
Howie Smith along with is players knew the Conquistadors' head coach for the last 25 years was just two wins away from hitting the 600-win milestone.
For the humble Smith, it was a mark he wanted to pass so the team could focus on the rest of the 2016 campaign.
His team complied with an explosive offensive showing, scoring 22 runs in sweeping the Blue Dragons 9-2 and 13-9 at Legends Park to get Smith his 599th and 600th victories in his illustrious career - one that will put him in the Dodge City Community College Athletics Hall of Fame later this spring.
"
This just means that I'm old," Smith joked after the game. "A lot of people say that. ... To me it's just a number. I'm not one who likes to talk about myself. This is more a testament to the players and other coaches that have been with me. I'll be honest, I was just hoping we could get this over quick so we could be done with it and move on."In both contests the Conquistadors (2-0) jumped out early on the NJCAA Division-II Blue Dragons (2-2) - taking an 8-1 lead in the first contest after two innings and a 10-2 lead after two innings in game two. Overall, the Conqs hit .339 for the doubleheader (20-for-59) with eight extra-base hits.
"
Credit goes to coach (Taylor) Hatfield," Smith said of his first-year assistant coach. "She went down and scouted Hutch the other day and came up with a great game plan today for not only calling a good game against their hitters, but letting the kids know what to expect from Holly (Kelley) - especially with her screwball. The kids did a great job in the one day we had to get them ready in executing."Game one featured a seven-run second inning that was highlighted by a two-run home run by
Candace Bollig - the first of three home runs in the doubleheader for the sophomore transfer from Barton. Bolling, the team's leadoff hitter, finished 4-for-6 with five RBI in the doubleheader.
"
That's what she can do," Smith said. "She's one where I don't try to mess with her swing a whole lot because she did it two years ago at Barton. She's a great lead-off hitter for us and she got things jumpstarted."The seven-run second-inning was more than enough for starting pitcher
Kim Herron as the freshman went the distance to pick up the win, giving up two runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Herron also factored into the second game in the circle, pitching the final 2.2 innings to pick up the save after the Blue Dragons cut what was once a 10-2 DC3 advantage to 10-8, giving up a run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
"
I can't say enough about Kim Herron," Smith said. "... With Hannah (Feagler) not being able to go today, for her to go the whole seven is something I hadn't really planned on. I didn't think her pitch count was that high, so we stayed with her. Then I was hoping Lindsey (Lemmon) and Mia (Trujillo) could get us through the second game. They hit them and ... we brought Kim in. That's what is nice about having depth on the pitching rubber. Kim did a great job and her pitches were moving all day."Trujillo picked up the win in game two, going three-plus innings and giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
DC3 in game two got going right away as Bollig led off the game with her third home run of the day (in four at-bats). A
Taryn Garza RBI single and back-to-back RBI doubles by
Marina Kelly and
Kayla Frazier made it 5-0 Conqs in the first inning. A sacrifice fly by Bolig and a runner scoring on an error later in the frame eventually made it 7-0 Conqs heading into the second inning.
After Hutchinson answered with two in the second, DC3 scored three more - one on an RBI single by
Taylor Menard and two more on a Blue Dragon error to make it 10-2.
Hutchinson slowly got back into the game and trailed 10-8 in the top of the fifth after scoring three in the frame before Herron shut the Blue Dragons down the rest of the way.
In the second game Menard went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs, two RBI and two stolen bases while Frazier was also 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and two stolen bases. Garza was 2-for-2 with three runs, an RBI and a pair of walks as well as seven of the nine hitters in the DC3 lineup got a hit.
The Conqs have a week until they host Northeastern Junior College noon Sunday at Legends Park.
