The Outdoor track and field season rolled along for the Dodge City track and field team as they competed over three days at the NJCAA Region 6 Outdoor Championships in Arkansas City, Kansas.
Several Conquistadors put together strong performances over the course of the competition, with another Conq earning a spot at nationals with his performance.
The highest finish at the Region 6 was
Deven Bolton, who placed second in the high jump with a leap of 2.05 meters (6'08.75"). His leap matched the best leap of the competition, but earned him second, as it took him three attempts to clear the height.
A national qualifying performance was posted in the 10,000-meter run by
Josue Vega as he posted a time of 31:07.98, beating the qualifying time by nearly one minute. He also placed third in the region in the event. Vega also recorded a ninth-place finish in the 5000-meter run (15:35.15).
It was a strong showing in the decathlon from
Brier Thompson as he totaled 5,656 points over 10 events, placing fourth overall. Thompson won three events in the decathlon, winning the 100-meter dash (10.77), long jump (6.53m), and 400m (50.38), while he took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.54) and discus (27.81m). The other events saw Thompson finish sixth in the pole vault (3.21m), seventh in the 1500-meter run (5:16.33), eighth in the high jump (1.60m), and ninth in both the shot put (9.67m) and javelin (32.98m). Thompson currently ranks 11th in the NJCAA in the decathlon.
Also, on the men's side of competition,
Coray Stafford recorded a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 10.57 in the finals. Stafford went 10.41 with the second fastest time in the prelims.
James Littlewood posted a time of 40.90 meters in the discus to earn a tenth-place finish in the region.
On the women's side of competition, the quartet of
Kamilla Dombi,
Karina Avalos Martinez,
Daniela Cerda, and
Sarai Rodriguez posted a time of 9:53.28 in the 4x800-meter relay to place fourth. Their time was just 1.28 seconds away from the national qualifying time.
Cerda also earned a seventh-place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:56.01, while
Denae Arellano placed eighth in the same event with a time of 20:03.87.
Olivia Leatherman competed in the heptathlon and totaled 3,879 points to finish seventh overall in the region. Her best performances over the seven events were a pair of third-place finishes, coming in the 100-meter hurdles (14.90) and long jump (5.13m). The other events saw Leatherman finish seventh in the shot put (8.25m), eighth in the 200-meter dash (27.13), ninth in the high jump (1.48m), tenth in the javelin (21.75m), and 12th in the 800-meter run (2:49.23). Leatherman currently ranks 15th in the heptathlon in the NJCAA.
The Conqs compete one final time before the NJCAA Division I Outdoor National Championships, which are set for May 14th-16th, as they will compete at the Shocker Open at Wichita State on Saturday, May 9th.
