The outdoor track and field season continued for Dodge City as they competed at the Grizzly Gold Invite in El Dorado, hosted by Butler. The two-day event featured primarily other NJCAA schools and a few four-year schools.
Once again, the performance of
Coray Stafford highlighted the Conquistador performances as he posted two top-three individual finishes. With a time of 10.13, Starfford took second place in the 100-meter dash and qualified for the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships. His time also broke the school record in the 100, breaking a record that dated back to 1989.
Stafford etched his name in the school record book again with his performance in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 21.04, taking third in the event. His time was not wind legal, but it sets the school record for the 200 with wind; his time would have qualified him for nationals, also if the race was run with legal wind. He competed against 49 other runners in both races.
The freshman, Stafford, was also part of the Conqs men's 4x100-meter relay team, which included
Careion Franklin,
Brier Thompson, and
J'Daryion Dickson. The quartet posted a time of 51.63 to finish third out of nine teams.
In the distance races, the Conqs had
Josue Vega post a time of 15:06.03 in the 5000-meter run, finishing seventh out of 50 runners. His time was less than three seconds off the national qualifying time.
Another standout performance for the Conqs was
James Littlewood, who posted personal best marks in the hammer throw and discus to place tenth and 12th, respectively, in each event. A throw of 44.55 meters (146'02") earned Littlewood tenth place out of 35 throwers in the hammer throw. While in the discus, a toss of 41.55 meters (136'04") gave him a 12th-place finish out of 36 throwers.
Conqs will compete at the Alex Francis Classic hosted by Fort Hays State University on Thursday, April 23rd, to keep competition rolling along for the outdoor season.
