Three Dodge City track and field athletes earned their way to the medal podium to cap the indoor season, highlighting the performances at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships, which took place in Topeka, Kansas, at Washburn University.
A pair of fifth-place finishes and a seventh-place finish led the Conqs at nationals. Racing his way to fifth place was
Coray Stafford in the 60-meter dash. Stafford on Friday earned his way into the finals behind a time of 6.67, breaking his own school record in the prelims. In the finals, Stafford was even faster with a time of 6.657 to finish fifth overall and break his school record again.
Deven Bolton had a strong finish to his indoor season, placing fifth in the high jump, posting a leap of 2.04 meters (6'08.25").
In the pentathlon,
Olivia Leatherman earned a seventh-place finish, totaling 3,097 points to break her own school record. Leatherman over the five events in the pentathlon having her best performance in the 60-meter hurdles (9.19) and high jump (1.47m), placing sixth in both events. She posted a time of 2:35.85 in the 800-meter run, which helped her move into the medal performances as she was eighth in the event. She took tenth in the long jump (4.88m) and 11th in the shot put (9.39m).
In the heptathlon,
Brier Thompson competed for the Conqs and placed 11th overall, totaling 4,148 points over the seven events in the heptathlon. His best showing individually was the first event as he won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.02. Thompson took sixth in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:54.61. He finished 11th in the pole vault (3.00m) and 60-meter hurdles (9.18), while placing 12th in the long jump (5.86m), 13th in the shot put (9.36m), and 14th in the high jump (1.63m).
The quartet of
Sophia Calistro,
Karina Avalos Martinez,
Denae Arellano, and
Sarai Rodriguez tallied a time of 10:14.32 in the 4x800 meter relay, recording an 11th-place finish.
Focus now turns to the outdoor season for the Conqs as they will open outdoor competition on March 27th-28th when they compete at the Broncbuster Invite in Garden City.
