Dodge City track and field opened the outdoor season, competing at the Emporia State Spring Open in a field that featured athletes from all levels, NJCAA, NAIA, and NCAA Division I and II.
Leading the way for the Conqs was the performance of
Coray Stafford, who, after a strong indoor season, started his outdoor season strong. Stafford posted a time of 10.25 in the 100-meter dash, earning second place out of 72 runners and time would be good for qualifying for outdoor nationals but is a wind aided time. He also took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.31, just barely missing the national qualifying time.
Deven Bolton took fifth place in the high jump competition, posting a leap of 2.01 meters (6'07") to open his outdoor season.
Also, in the men's competition,
Josue Vega, with a time of 15:23.28, earned sixth place out of nearly 30 competitors in the 5000-meter run. Vega was just 20 seconds off the national qualifying time.
On the women's side of competition,
Denae Arellano raced to a sixth-place finish in the 5000-meter run behind a time of 19:58.29.
In the 100-meter hurdles,
Olivia Leatherman took eighth place, recording a time of 14.91.
The outdoor season will continue for the Conqs on April 10-11th in El Dorado as they compete at the Grizzly Gold Invite hosted by Butler.
