Dodge City track and field put together some strong performances at the NJCAA Region 6 Indoor Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas.
As a team, the Conquistador women totaled 20.5 points to finish tenth, while the men finished 11th with 14 points, finishing fifth and sixth in the KJCCC West standings as teams.
Helping lead the charge for top performances for the Conqs was the trio of
Olivia Leatherman,
Sophia Calistro, and
Brier Thompson, who competed in the multis.
Leatherman earned a third-place finish in the pentathlon, amassing 2,992 total points over the five events that are a part of the pentathlon. She established a school record in the pentathlon with her performance. She took third in the long jump (5.06m – 16'07.75") as her best finish, while taking fourth in the high jump (1.47m – 4'09.75") and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.34). In the shot put (8.36m – 27'05.25"), she earned a seventh-place finish and placed ninth in the 800-meter run (2:40.65). She currently ranks fifth in the NJCAA in the pentathlon; the top 16 qualify for NJCAA nationals.
Calistro competed in her first ever pentathlon and placed eighth with 2,694 total points over five events. Her best performance came in the high jump (1.50m – 4'11) as she took second place, while she took fifth in the long jump (4.92m – 16'01.75"). Calistro placed tenth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.56) and shot put (7.93m – 26'00.25"), while also finishing 12th in the 800-meter run (2:43.86). She currently ranks 16th in the NJCAA in the pentathlon. She also brought home a sixth-place finish in the regular high jump competition with a leap of 1.47 meters (4'10").
On the men's side of the multi-event Thompson competed in the heptathlon, which features seven events and placed sixth with 4,014 points. His best event was the 60-meter dash (7.18) as he placed third in the event, while grabbing fifth in the 1000-meter run (2:53.48) and sixth in both the long jump (5.89m – 19'04") and 60-meter hurdles (9.39). Thompson finished seventh in the high jump (1.66m – 5'05.25") and shot put (9.16m – 30'00.75"), while also tying for eighth in the pole vault (2.73m – 8'11.5"). He currently ranks 15th in the NJCAA in the heptathlon.
Coray Stafford had a strong outing at the Region 6 Indoor Championships as he broke the school record in the 60-meter dash in the prelims with a time of 6.77. In the finals of the 60-meter dash, Stafford posted a time of 6.83 to finish fifth overall and win the KJCCC West. He also competed in the 200-meter dash, notching a time of 21.84 in the prelims to earn a spot in the finals, where he finished seventh with a time of 22.03.
Deven Bolton earned a spot at nationals with a leap of 1.99 meters (6'06") in the high jump, qualifying him to compete at indoor nationals. His performance also earned him a seventh-place finish at the Region 6 Indoor Championships.
Racing to a sixth-place finish was
Daniela Cerda in the 5000-meter run, posting a time of 19:18.71. Also, on the track,
Sarai Rodriguez earned an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:31.12) and took third in the KJCCC West.
Joining Calistro in the high jump with scoring performance was
Ava Pillay who, with a leap of 1.42 meters (4'08) tied for eighth place.
Conqs will wrap up the indoor season with the athletes that have qualified for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships competing at nationals on March 6th-7th in Topeka, Kansas, at Washburn University.
