Pair of Podium Performances Lead Conqs Track & Field at NJCAA Outdoor Nationals

A pair of Dodge City track and field athletes earned a spot on the podium at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor National Championship in Hutchinson to highlight the Conquistador performances at nationals. 

Several Conqs competed at the national championships to cap the outdoor season, and it was the performance of Olivia Leatherman and Brenden Carter that highlighted the action for the Conqs. 

Leatherman brought home a seventh-place finish in the heptathlon, accumulating 4,097 total points over seven events, breaking her own school record for the heptathlon. She started competition on day one taking third in the 100-meter hurdles with time of 15.04, then seventh in the high jump with leap of 1.50 meters (4'11"), 12th in the shot put with a throw of 8.52 meters (27'11.5"), and seventh in the 200-meter dash with time of 26.87. On day two she wrapped up the heptathlon with the final three events starting by taking second in the long jump with a leap of 5.07 meters (16'07.5") and tenth in the javelin (24.13 meters – 79'02") and the 800-meter run (2:45.10). Her performance earns her USTFCCCA NJCAA All-American honors. 

Carter caps his Conq career by medaling for the third time in high jump at nationals after getting on the podium as a freshman in both the indoor and outdoor season, he took eighth during outdoor this year. A leap of 2.02 meters (6'07.5") earned Carter the eighth-place finish and USTFCCCA NJCAA All-American honors for the third time in his career. 

Other field event competition for the Conqs at nationals featured Tory Gethers, who took 15th place in the javelin behind a throw of 52.06 meters (170'10"), while Matthew Garcia earned 11th place in the shot put with a throw of 14.68 meters (48'02"). Deven Bolton joined Carter in the high jump and finished 21st with a leap of 1.97 meters (6'05.5"). Dante Reid also competed in the hammer throw. 

On the track, the women's 4x800 meter relay of Ivy Washington, Ava Washington, Gracee May, and Sarai Chavez posted a time of 9:44.09 to finish 11th. Ivy Washington also competed in the 10,000-meter run, recording a time of 39:43.55 to place 19th, while Chavez ran in the 800-meter run, posting a 29th-place finish with a time of 2:23.94. 

Bianca Gleim was also in action for the Conq ladies as she ran in the 400-meter dash, finishing 17th place with a time of 56.27. 

On the men's side of competition on the track, Kasey Kopetic, with a time of 14.56, took 13th place in the 110-meter hurdles, while Albert House placed 18th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.40. Josue Vega ran a time of 15:34.11 to finish 17th in the 5000-meter run, and Alex Teffu took 34th place in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:07.37. 

Conqs wrapped up the outdoor season by competing at the highest level and putting together some solid performances.
