Dodge City women's basketball program continues to have success under Head Coach
Landon Steele as the 2024-25 season was the best in school history with the team finishing 31-5, winning the KJCCC and Region 6 titles, while making the Final Four in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.
The team's success led to an opportunity for the Conquistadors' previous assistant coach, Ethan McIlhargey, at the NCAA Division I level to be an assistant at the University of Texas at Arlington. With his departure, Coach Steele brings in
Alyssia Martinez to take on the duties of assistant coach for the Conq women's basketball program.
The Highlands Ranch, Colorado native comes to Dodge City after spending the 2024-25 season at NCAA DII Augustana University, where she was an assistant coach, and where she was a graduate assistant from 2021-22 while earning her master's degree.
"I'm grateful to Coach Steele for this opportunity at Dodge City. It's an honor to work alongside and learn from a coach who's highly respected in the women's basketball community and has built a program that consistently competes on the national stage. I'm excited for the opportunity to help shape the future of a group of talented young women while making an impact in a supportive and tight-knit community," said Martinez on the opportunity to coach at Dodge City.
Martinez, while at Augustana, worked on player development in several ways as an assistant coach, along with recruiting, coordinating travel, meals, etc., while also overseeing marketing/fundraising and social media. She helped coach a second-team All-NSIC player, Hannah Burg at Augustana. Before Augustana, Martinez was the Director of Graphic Design/Video and Development Liaison for Air Force Academy women's basketball. While at Air Force, she assisted in player development, organization of travel logistics, and clipped game and practice footage for film sessions, among many tasks. On staff at Air Force Academy from 2022-2024, she was a part of the program's second and third-winningest seasons.
She started her coaching career at Augustana, where in 2021-22 she was an Operations and Marketing Graduate Assistant. For the Vikings, Martinez's duties included graphic design, event management, and marketing.
Prior to her time at Augustana, Martinez played college basketball at NCAA Division II Black Hills State University, seeing action in 110 games over five seasons (2016-2021) as a guard, finishing with 429 career points, while shooting over 40% from three-point range. The Colorado native was part of the Black Hills State team that earned an NCAA DII National Tournament At-Large bid in 2017, along with being on the team making an appearance in 2020-21 and was part of the 2021 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament champions team. She was also named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Black Hills State in 2021 before receiving a Master's Degree in Sports Administration and Leadership from Augustana in May of 2024.
Martinez looks to help the Conqs continue their success. "I hope to impact the program by bringing energy, consistency, and a competitive edge to Dodge City women's basketball. My goal is to help Coach Steele with the continuation of building a culture that embraces hard work, togetherness, and pride in representing Dodge City," said Martinez.
