Final Four Bound - Women's Basketball Defeats New Mexico to Earn Trip to First Ever Final Four

On to the Final Four as the Dodge City women's basketball team avenged an earlier season loss to New Mexico beating the Thunderbirds in the Elite Eight of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Casper, Wyoming.

The win moves the Conquistadors to 31-4 on the season and rolls them into the program's first-ever final four as they avenged an earlier season loss and an opening-round loss to New Mexico from the 2023 national tournament. The Conqs will now take on Shelton State in the Final Four on Monday, March 31st at 5:00 pm (4:00 pm MST) after Shelton State beat Chipola 61-60 in the Elite Eight.

After an early 2-0 and 3-2 lead the Conqs would find themselves behind in the first quarter but keeping it tight as both teams struggle to find the bottom of the net. A layup in the final minute of the first quarter by New Mexico gave them a 15-10 advantage entering the second quarter. The Conqs would open the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take the lead but it was short-lived as New Mexico snatched it back and led 19-18 with just under five minutes left in the first half. To finish the first half the Conqs would outscore the Thunderbirds 6-3 and carry a 25-21 lead into intermission. The Conqs would get to the rim to open the second half with three layups and mount a 6-0 run to take the first double-digit lead of the game at 31-21 and force a New Mexico timeout. Throughout the third quarter the Conqs would continue to hold off New Mexico and ultimately outscore them 18-11 before capping the game with a 15-9 fourth quarter to secure the 58-41 victory.

Conqs defense was next level yet again as they held the Thunderbirds to just 25.4% shooting and just 4-25 from three-point range while forcing 13 turnovers. Offensively the Conqs shot just 31.3% and overcame a 3-30 shooting performance from three-point range, as they took care of the ball and had just eight turnovers.

Shorna Preston recorded her 20th double-double of the season and was named the Jersey Mike's Player of the Game by the NJCAA finishing with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Layla-J Cameron finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Tayah Morgan added 11 points. Morane Dossou had a strong game on the boards grabbing nine rebounds for the Conqs.

The Conqs will now prepare for Shelton State out of Alabama in the Final Four looking to earn a spot in the NJCAA DI National Championship. The Final Four matchup is set for Monday, March 31st at 5:00 pm (4:00 pm MST) in Casper, Wyoming at the Ford Wyoming Center.
