Women's Basketball Caps Historic Season in Final Four

The historic run came to an end in the Final Four for the Dodge City women's basketball team as they fell in a heartbreaking 60-59 contest versus Shelton State in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament Final Four. 
 
The Conquistadors close out their historic season with a 31-5 record marking the most wins in a single season in school history to go along with a KJCCC and Region 6 championship, while making the programs first ever Final Four. 
 
For the first three minutes of action, only five points were scored as the Conqs led 3-2 and it remained tight with the Conqs pushing to a seven-point lead at 16-9 with just under three minutes left in the first quarter. Conqs carried an 18-14 lead into the second quarter. The lead worked its way to seven again in the second quarter until Shelton State tied the game at 23-23 with 4:30 left in the first half. Shelton State with just over a minute left in the half grabbed the lead at 28-27 and would take that into halftime. The second half would start with a 15-2 run by Shelton State led to the Conqs trailing 43-29 halfway through the third quarter as the Conqs would trail 51-38 entering the fourth quarter. The Conqs would push back with a 13-0 run to tie the game at 51-51 with 4:36 left in the game; both teams would get only one more bucket in regulation as the Conqs would tie it again on a Layla-J Cameron layup at 53-53 with 46 seconds remaining. A late turnover spoiled the Conqs' chance at the final shot of regulation and Shelton State misfired on a three-pointer at the buzzer sending the game to overtime. 
 
In overtime teams traded points early and then Shelton State would hit a three-pointer with 2:10 left to lead 60-57. The Conqs would get a bucket by Shorna Preston to draw within one and ultimately have the final shot of the game and come up just short falling 60-59. 
 
The loss saw the Conqs shoot 40.7% from the but have 19 turnovers in the game, while holding Shelton State to 36.4% shooting as they made 10 three-pointers. 
 
Cameron paced the Conqs with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Preston chipped in 11 points with nine rebounds. Mia Jordan added 11 points, three rebounds, and three steals. 
 
The Conqs capped the fourth year under Head Coach Landon Steele by etching themselves in the history books at Dodge City. They finished 31-5, winning KJCCC and Region 6 titles. They also made the National Tournament for the third straight year and made the program's first-ever Final Four.
