Baseball Tallies 36 Runs On First Road Trip Going 2-1 in Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The first road trip of the season packed a powerful punch for the Dodge City baseball team as the Conquistadors offense dominated the first day of action before cooling off for the final game of the trip. The Conqs over the weekend scored 36 runs and had 39 hits in three games. 

The Conqs would notch a 2-1 record for the weekend in Hobbs, New Mexico taking on New Mexico and #11 Weatherford. Friday saw the Conqs secure a pair of tight victories with late runs beating New Mexico 16-15 and then Weatherford 18-17. Saturday would see the Conqs fall 13-2 to New Mexico in five innings. 

Winning the first two games of the weekend gave the Conqs a 6-0 start to the season which is the best start since the 2016 season, while the Conqs with the loss in the road trip finale are 6-1 on the season. 

The Conqs are back in action next week on February 21st-22nd as they are set to take on KCK in Kansas City for a three-game series. (stay tuned for updates on any schedule changes) 

Won 16-15 at New Mexico 
Conqs wasted no time to get the offense rolling as they tallied three runs in the first inning against New Mexico with an RBI double from Jose Alfonso and then a two-run home run by Calvin Warrillow. In the bottom of the second, the Conqs lead grew to 5-0 as Josh McClintock belted a two-run home run but New Mexico countered scoring five in the bottom of the second to draw even early. The lead flipped to the home team as the Thunderbirds of New Mexico scratched a run across in the bottom of the third and then three more in the fifth with two outs to lead 9-5 after five innings. 

The top of the sixth saw the offense get rolling again for the Conqs with an RBI double from McClintock and an RBI single by Juan Concepcion pulling the Conqs within two runs at 9-7. In the seventh inning, the lead returned to the Conqs with a five-run output highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Concepcion and an RBI double from Alfonso to make it 12-9. New Mexico again had an answer as they posted four runs in the bottom of the seventh making it 13-12 after seven innings. A two-RBI single by Seth Brown pushed the Conqs in front as they would score a total of three runs in the eighth to lead 15-13. Conqs got an insurance run in the ninth and would need it as New Mexico blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to make it a one-run game and then had the tying run on base after a walk, but the Conqs turned a double play to cap the game and seal a 16-15 victory. 

The Conqs pounded out 17 hits with six players recording a multi-hit game. Concepcion, Brown, and Alfonso each had a three-hit game. For Concepcion it was a 3-5 game with two runs scored, three RBI, a walk, and a triple, while Brown was 3-4 with three RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Alfonso finished 3-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, a walk, a hit by pitch, two stolen bases, and two doubles. McClintock added a 2-6 performance with four RBI, a home run, two runs scored, and a double, while Warrillow was 2-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, a home run, and a walk. 

On the mound Marcos Santiago earned the win by tossing the final 2.1 innings, while starter Connor Lovin tossed four innings and recorded seven strikeouts. 

Won 18-17 vs #11 Weatherford
It was early and often offense yet again for the Conqs as they took on #11 Weatherford in game two on Friday. The home run ball got things started again for the Conqs as Concepcion sent one out for a two-run home run in the first inning. Weatherford countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The second inning saw the Conqs on the board again as Cory Chostner notched an RBI single and Concepcion tattooed his second home run of the game another two-run shot. In the bottom of the second, Weatherford tallied two giving the Conqs a 5-4 lead after two innings. Each team posted two more runs in the third inning and then were both scoreless in the fourth. 

In the bottom of the fifth Weatherford batted around and scored four to take the lead going up 10-7 but the Conqs rallied yet again putting up a five spot in the top of the sixth. Conqs regained the lead in the sixth on a sac-fly by Ben Longoria that scored Alfonso and then Chostner brought in the 12th run of the game for the Conqs on an RBI single. Weatherford got a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and four in the eighth which gave them the lead back at 17-16. The Conqs scored three in the seventh, one in the eighth, and then plated two in the top of the ninth to snatch the lead back at 18-17. Weatherford loaded the bases with zero outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Conqs worked out of the jam getting an infield flyout and then capping the game with a double play to win 18-17. 

Conqs pounded out 18 runs on 20 hits in the win with seven players recording a multi-hit game. McClintock paced the offense going 4-5 with three runs scored, two walks, and two stolen bases. Concepcion packed some power going 3-5 with two home runs, four RBI, four runs scored, and two walks, while Warrillow was 3-6 with three runs scored. Chostner, Josh McGuin, MD Conner, and Alfonso each had two hits in the win. 

Six different pitchers saw action for the Conqs as Manuel Burguesa earned the win tossing one inning, while Santiago who got the win in game one picked up the save tossing the ninth. 

Lost 13-2 vs New Mexico (5 innings)
The Conqs jumped up early scoring in the first inning for the sixth time in seven games this season taking advantage of two New Mexico errors to plate two runs as a sacrifice fly by Alfonso and groundout by Conner each brought in a run. New Mexico answered in the bottom of the first with five runs and would continue to add to the lead scoring two in the second, one in the third, and five in the fourth. The Conqs offense cooled off and was unable to generate any more runs sending the Conqs to a 13-2 loss in five innings. 

Warrillow was 1-2 with a double, while Tyler Jensen was 1-1 with a stolen base, and McClintock scored a run, was hit by a pitch, and stole a base. Will David and Lane Benavides saw action for the Conqs on the mound.
