Dodge City softball looks to continue to build for the future and put together a strong 2025 season this upcoming year as Head Coach,
Mike Viramontez enters his second season leading the program. He heads into year two with a new assistant coach at his side as McKenzie Wagoner joins the staff.
Wagoner fresh off wrapping up her collegiate playing career joins the Conquistadors after pitching for the University of North Texas the past two years helping the Mean Green put together some strong performances the past two seasons.
"I want to help these student-athletes reach their goals in softball as well as in their daily lives. I hope to push them to be their best selves and provide support for them on and off the field. Teaching these young women, the knowledge of the game, and how to find joy inside and outside of this sport is what excites me the most," said Wagoner on the opportunity to start her coaching career at Dodge City.
While with the Mean Green, she helped them finish third in the American Conference this past season as a senior as she appeared in 34 games with 19 starts in the circle recording a 13-7 record and 2.54 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 135 innings, while holding opponents to just a .241 batting average. She earned American Conference All-Tournament team honors her senior year. Her junior year saw her post a 12-8 record in 33 appearances with 85 strikeouts in 132 innings with two saves and a 1.54 ERA which ranked 35th in the nation and was the second lowest in a single season in school history. Wagoner earned second-team All-Conference USA honors during the 2023 season helping the Mean Green take second in Conference USA.
Before her final two seasons at North Texas, she suited up for Liberty University where she was a part of two Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. As a sophomore, she picked up six wins in the circle in 61 innings with a 2.51 ERA helping Liberty go 44-18. During her freshman season, she recorded five wins in 16 appearances helping Liberty to a 44-15 record and NCAA Knoxville Regional appearance.
In high school, she was named Oklahoma Gatorade Softball Player of the Year in 2020 and earned the Michele Smith Award at Newcastle High School. She helped Newcastle to three straight state tournament appearances including a runner-up finish in her junior year and a state title in her senior year.
"I want to help the team cultivate a winning mentality and have fun in the process," said Wagoner on how she hopes to impact the Dodge City softball program.
