Box Score 3 Dodge City baseball made a trip down to Edmond, Oklahoma, and competed at the University of Central Oklahoma Showcase which featured multiple junior colleges.
The Conquistadors put together a 2-1 showing dropping game one of the action to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 11-7 but responded by winning the next two versus Coffeyville 12-6 and Seminole State 1-0. With the 2-1 performance the Conqs are now 7-3 on the season.
The non-conference slate continues for the Conqs but they will be at home for the first time this season in their next contests as they are set to host Luna on Friday, February 23rd for a doubleheader at 12:00 and 2:30 pm, and then will take on Northeast and Highland on Sunday, February 25th at 11:00 am and 4:00 pm.
Game 1 – Lost 11-7 vs Northeastern Oklahoma A&M
The Conqs grabbed the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first against NEO but in the top of the second NEO answered with three runs to lead 3-1. In the bottom of the second
Juan Rivera hit a ground-rule double to bring in
Andrew Detlefsen making it a 3-2 contest. After no scoring in the third, the fourth would feature nine runs between the two teams. NEO plated five runs in the top of the fourth and the Conqs trying to keep up would tally four in the bottom of the fourth as
Nicholas Gray hit a two-run homer to highlight the inning. NEO would add a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, while the Conqs were able to only get one more in the bottom of the seventh falling 11-7.
Rivera led the Conqs offense going 2-5 with a run scored, double, stolen base, and RBI, while Gray was 1-3 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored. On the mound, five different Conqs saw action in the loss.
Game 2 – Won 12-6 vs Coffeyville
Once again early offense propelled the Conqs as they took the early advantage against Coffeyville in the second game of the UCO Showcase. Both teams got on the board in the first inning with a run each and in the second both teams would score again. The top of the second saw the Conqs plate three runs and Coffeyville tally two leading to a 4-3 Conqs lead after just two innings. In the third, the Conqs would separate themselves scoring five more runs highlighted by an RBI double from
Brian Hallum and an RBI single by
Peter Tassler. Coffeyville got a run back in the fourth, but the Conqs again scored in the fifth with three runs with a two-run homer by Tassler and an RBI double by
Ethan Hewell. Coffeyville would tally two in the sixth but it wasn't enough as the Conqs earned the 12-6 win.
Hallum, Tassler, and Hewell paced the Conqs at the plate each having a multi-hit contest. Hallum finished 2-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI and tossed four innings as the starter to earn the win on the mound. Tassler was 2-2 with three runs scored, a home run, two RBI, and two walks, while Hewell posted a 2-4 showing with two RBI and a double.
Game 3 – Won 1-0 vs Seminole State
The final games of the UCO Showcase would prove to be a pitcher's duel and the Conqs pitching staff would stymie Seminole State and hold them off the scoreboard while the Conqs would manage one run despite one-hit and earn the 1-0 win. In the bottom of the fifth, a single by Detlefsen and a walk by Tassler got two early base runners in the inning for the Conqs. After a sacrifice bunt by
Jordan Rodriguez, the Conqs would score off an error from Seminole State as
Nick Mesquita was safe and Detlefsen tallied the game's lone run. In the top of the sixth Seminole State threatened with two on in scoring position but came up empty and the Conqs secured the 1-0 win.
The Conqs pitching was stout as
Garret Carter got the start tossing two scoreless innings giving up just a walk and struckout three.
Michael Lopez threw three innings keeping Seminole State off the board giving up just four hits and a walk, while striking out six.
Nathan Harmon and
Nicholas Gray each tossed a scoreless inning to cap the game. Offensively, Detlefsen recorded the Conqs lone hit going 1-2 with a run scored, while Tassler drew two walks.
