Conquistador Softball is Ready for the Region Tournament

(Dodge City, Kansas) -- The Dodge City Community College Softball team has concluded the regular season on a bit of a hot streak. Their recent play has allowed for the Conquistadors to secure the #3 seed in the upcoming Region VI tournament. The tournament will be hosted at their home park in Dodge City, KS. Playing at home could be an advantage for the Conquistadors according to Coach Howie Smith. "I believe that it may be a small advantage that we are playing on the turf, and we have played really well at home (14-4) except for a couple of games."

Coach Smith also thinks that the Conquistadors have found a sweet spot with their preparation and not much will change going into the tournament despite potentially playing anywhere from 2-6 games in three days. "I think we found something for practices and games that the coaching staff, and our players are comfortable with, and we have stayed the course with It since it has seemed to work. We have not tried to zap the energy out of them with having 3-4-hour practices.  We get to the field, get our work in, get our bullpen sessions completed, and we are out of practice in 75-90 minutes."

It certainly helps that the team has gotten hot at the right time. Over the last three weeks, the Conqs have won 8 of their last 10 games, including 7 of their last 8 in the KJCCC. To have a chance at getting to the championship game on Sunday, Coach Smith feels that "we have to be able to utilize our speed and make productive outs.  Also, we have to do an excellent job when we get runners in the red zone (runner(s) at 2nd or 2nd or 3rd with less than 2 outs) to drive those runners in."

One thing that this team certainly has going for it is resiliency. It has a tough first game on Friday at 5:00 p.m. against Hutchinson Community College. In the two games earlier this year, the Blue Dragons won both. However, this Conq Softball team has bounced back all season long and will surely have learned from those two. One thing is for sure; this team is going into the tournament with the belief that they can win it. "Our confidence is at the right place right now.  They believe in themselves, and they believe we can win this thing if we do the little things."
