Box Score The Dodge City Community College men's basketball team returned to the floor for the first time since December 10 against non-conference foe Northern Oklahoma College-Enid. Unfortunately the Conqs could not overcome a long range shooting performance from the Jets on their way to a 96-85 loss.
The first half started promising as the Conqs went to leading scorer
Jyrus Freels for a couple of early buckets. It appeared that the inside game of the Conqs might be a little overpowering for the Jets. Enid made adjustments to their defense and doubled the ball in the post to take away some of the size advantage that Dodge City had. The Jets managed to couple their change in defense with some hot shooting to eventually pull out to a 34-29 advantage at the media timeout of the first half. Both teams' offenses slowed in the second ten minutes of the opening period. Dodge pulled to within two at one point, but Enid quickly stretched their lead back out. By the time the first half horn sounded, Enid had pulled out to a 47-37 lead over the Conqs.Â
The second half saw a much better offensive effort for the Conqs. They started the half somewhat stagnant on the offensive end, but eventually found their go to spots as they did a better job of attacking the basket and drawing fouls. However, the Jet offense stayed strong as well as they seemed to get a big shot every time they needed one to turn away a Conq rally. With seven and a half minutes remaining the Jets had pulled out to a 74-59 lead after a technical was whistled on
Justice Dixon. Dixon's technical however, seemed to ignite the Conqs as they quickly scored seven straight points to cut the lead to eight. They were not able to maintain that momentum as Enid once again answered with a long range bomb to stop the Dodge City run. In the end the Conqs could not overcome the long range shooting and fell by the final 11 point margin.
Freels led four Dodge City players in double figures with 22 points on the night while also grabbing 11 rebounds. Dixon also turned in a double-double with 19 points and 11 assists for the Conqs.
Kevin Howard and
Kobe Haley were the other two Conqs in double figures scoring 14 and 13 point respectively.
The loss leaves the Conqs with an overall record of 6-8. They will return to Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Cowley College for an 8:00pm tip.
