For the 15th time in school history, the Dodge City men's basketball team has a player earn NJCAA All-American honors as
Derrick Rivers closed out his Conquistador career, picking up second-team NJCAA All-American honors.
Rivers is the second Conq under Head Coach
Brad Witherspoon, to earn NJCAA All-American honors and 15th overall, third in the last five years.
Rivers started and played in all 31 games this season for the Conqs, helping the team post a 20-11 record. The sophomore led the team in scoring as was one of the top scorers in the NJCAA, averaging 20.4 points per game while adding 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 88.8% from the free throw line. On top of earning All-American honors, he earned KJCCC Player of the Year honors and first team All-KJCCC honors.
He ranked in the top 10 in the NJCAA in made free throws, free-throw percentage, and total points during the season. He was second in the KJCCC in points, points per game, free throws made, and free throw percentage.
The St. Louis native broke three school records, setting the single-season made free throws record with 207 and the single-season free-throw percentage record, while also breaking the record for career free-throw percentage, shooting 86.5% from the line in his two seasons at Dodge City. He also ranks in the top 10 in school history: third in career points (1,051) and career made free throws (300), fourth in career steals (103), fifth in single-season points (631), and seventh in career made three pointers (117).
Rivers closed out his Conq career as one of only four players in program history to record over 1,000 career points and the 15th Conq men's basketball player to earn NJCAA All-American honors.
