Box Score Slow starts ended up being the doom of the Dodge City volleyball team here on Monday night. In each of the three sets that the Conqs lost, they got off to slow starts in the set and despite great efforts to comeback they fell short in those sets losing a five set match 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-27, and 11-15.
In the first set the Conqs fell behind early and trailed 10-5 at one point. They gradually made a comeback to get the set close at 22-20, but they could not overcome the slow start and fell by the 25-22 margin. In the second set Dodge City used a great energy to jump on Seminole early and despite a Trojan run in the middle of the set, the Conqs finished off the set by a six point margin.
The third set was close all the way through as neither team could put together a long run of points. In the end the Conqs used energy from a raucous student section to push them out to a 2-1 set lead. The fourth set saw Dodge City fall behind significantly early. At one point they trailed 18-9 in the set, but they went on a run of their own to push the set to extra points. They managed to tie the game at 23, 24, then again at 25. In the end they ran out of gas and Seminole strung together two points to win the set.
The final set was a battle early as both teams exchanged points until they switched sides with the Trojans leading by a 8 to 7 count. At that point the Conqs lost their momentum and gave up four straight points to fall behind 12-7. They were never able to recover from that as they lost the final set by four points.
"We still need to work on our conviction after we get to 20 points," said head coach
Rachel Williams. "These girls have the tools, we just need to believe differently and we will see results."
The Conqs are back in action on Wednesday at home as they will host a triangular with Sterling College JV and Friends University JV. Dodge City will take on Friends at 3:00pm and Sterling at 6:30pm, with Friends facing off with Sterling in between those matches. Â
