Box Score 2 LAMAR, Colo. – The Conquistadors were handed two losses on Friday as they lost to Lamar Community College in three sets and then fell to Otero Junior College in three sets on the first day of the Quiznos Classic in Lamar, Colo.
Early in the first set against Lamar, the Conqs took an 8-6 lead, forcing the Runnin' Lopes to take their first timeout of the set.
Coming out of the timeout, Lamar was able to tie the game at 10, but the Conqs went on a 5-0 run to force Lamar to call their second timeout.
Dodge City was forced to call a timeout in set one as the Runnin' Lopes cut the lead to five. After the timeout, Lamar was able to tie the game at 20 and then eventually take the lead at 21-20.
Lamar kept the pedal down for the rest of the set, winning set one, 25-21.
In set two, Lamar took an 18-12 lead late into the set. The Runnin' Lopes never looked back, only allowing Dodge City to score one more point the rest of the set, winning, 25-13.
Early in set three, the Conqs battled back-and-forth with the Runnin' Lopes, but Lamar ended up pulling away to win the match in three sets.
In the second match of the day, Dodge City struggled to get things going, but were able to battle throughout.
Although the Conquistadors lost in three sets, coach Williams thought the team had more fight than their first match of the day.
Dodge City will continue the Quiznos Classic tomorrow as they play Frank Phillips College at 1 p.m. (CT) and then play Trinidad State Junior College at 5 p.m. (CT).
