Conqs Sweep Cloud to Finish Regular Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - Behind a huge performance from Garrett McGowan, the Conquistadors were able to sweep Cloud County on Saturday to finish their regular season on the right note heading into Region VI Tournament play.

In game one, McGowan was able to go a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with all three hits being home runs to drive in five runs. McGowan then stayed hot in game two, going 2-for-5 and scoring three runs.

Padraic Walsh started game one on the hill for Dodge City, throwing all five innings and allowing just a single hit in the game to lead Dodge City to the win.

Cade Engle got things going early as he led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run. After a double by Brayden Cook and two quick outs, McGowan added to Dodge City's lead with his first home run of the game to score two and give Dodge City a 3-0 lead.

The second inning started with six straight hits for Dodge City including a grand slam from Cook. After a single from Colton Onstott, McGowan then stepped to the plate and hit his second home run of the day to make it 10-0 in just the second inning.

McGowan then led off the fourth inning for Dodge City and stayed hot, hitting his third home run in as many at-bats to give Dodge City an 11-0 lead heading into the fifth. Walsh then got two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game and give Dodge City an 11-0 win in game one. 

Collecting 16 hits and 16 runs in game two, the Conquistadors were able to hold off the T-Birds to complete the sweep. Foster Gifford got the call for game two and threw 4.1 innings and allowed five runs before Tyler Whalen took over and threw 2.1 innings. Jake Taylor and Taylor Lepard also pitched in the game with Taylor throwing 1.1 innings and Lepard throwing 1.0 inning.

Dodge City got on the board early in game two, scoring five runs in the second inning as Cooper Shearon scored one on a sac-fly. After a single from Tanner White scored a run and Cameron Fritz singled to move him to third Blake Rast laid down a perfect bunt to give Dodge City a 3-0 lead. Before the inning was over, Cook and Onstott both singled to score a run and give Dodge City a 5-0 lead.

The T-Birds were able to cut into the lead in the top of the third, scoring two runs on four hits, but Dodge City would not let the T-Birds back into the game, adding three more runs in the bottom of the third on three consecutive errors and a bases loaded walk to give Dodge City an 8-2 lead.

Cloud was able to stay in the game, scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-5, but Dodge City responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a sac-bunt to push the lead to 9-5. Again in the sixth, Dodge City got another run as McGowan led off the inning with a triple to center and later scored on a double from White to make it 10-5.

Each time the T-Birds made a comeback, Dodge City was able to respond. Cloud scored three in the seventh to cut the lead to two, but Dodge City came back with six in the bottom of the seventh. Onstott got things going with a one-out home run. After a bunt single by Tate and a single from McGowan, Shearon then doubled to score Tate for the second run of the inning. White then followed it up with a single to score two and then Fritz capped off the inning with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 16-8.

Cloud County then scored two in the eighth and two in the ninth, but could not complete the comeback as Lepard got two flyouts and a groundout to end the game and give Dodge City a 16-12 win in game two.

Dodge City finishes the regular season with an overall record of 31-23 and 15-17 in KJCCC play. They will now play Neosho County in the first round of the Region VI Playoffs in Chanute, Kan., on Friday, May, 4 at 1 p.m.
