Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - Going up against one of the top pitchers in the conference in game one, the Conquistadors were able to jump on him early and put up five runs in the first inning to help them win game one, 9-4 and split the day, losing game two, 10-6.
Carter Hogan threw another complete game in game one as he struck out eight and allowed four runs on seven hits, three of which were earned.
The offense got going early as
Cade Engle doubled to lead off the game. After two quick outs, back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Conqs. An error by the third baseman gave Dodge City their first run of the game, but
Colton Talton then belted a ball over the wall for a grand slam to give Dodge City an early 5-0 lead.
After two quick strikeouts to start the third,
Cooper Shearon added another run for the Conqs on a solo home run to push their lead to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
It was not until the fifth inning that the T-Birds got on the board, as they began the inning with back-to-back hits which later came around to score to cut the lead to 6-2.
Dodge City quickly responded in the top of the sixth as
Cade Engle led off the inning with a solo home run. After two more hits following the home run, the Conqs were able to score two more on an error and a fielder's choice to extend their lead back to 9-2. The T-Birds would get two back in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout to first base ended the game and gave Dodge City a 9-4 win.
Johnny Chavez got the call in game two, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits with only one run being earned before handing the game to
Taylor Lepard. Lepard then finished the seventh inning and then
Eric Lindsay took over. Lindsay pitched 0.1 of an inning before
Aaron Duncan entered the game. Duncan then collected the final two outs.
The Conqs defense got a little shaky in game two, committing seven errors in the game, helping the T-Birds to a 10-6 win.
Dodge City still got on the board first in the top of the third inning. After Talton led off the inning with a double,
Garrett Allen moved him to second with a sac-bunt, then he scored on a single from Engle to give the Conqs a 1-0 lead. An error to start the very next inning got things started for the T-Birds as the error came around to score on a single and another single later in the inning scored another run to give Cloud their first lead of the day, 2-1.
The Conquistadors took the lead back in the top of the fifth as they scored three runs on a single from Cook and doubles from
Colton Onstott and
Dauson Tate to take a 4-2 lead.
The T-Birds were able to get two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, but Dodge City quickly took the lead back on a single from
Garrett McGowan. After Cloud tied the game again in the bottom of the seventh, the T-Birds were able to get five runs on three hits and one error to break the game open, 10-5. The Conqs were able to get one in the top of the ninth on a passed ball, but that is all they would get, losing game two, 10-6.
The Conqs are now 29-23 on the year and 13-17 in KJCCC play. They will finish up the regular season on Saturday as they host Cloud for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., at Cavalier Field.
