Conqs Walk-Off in Game Two to Split with Barton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - After a 13-4 loss in five innings in game one, the Conquistador offense came alive in game two and never backed down as they defeated Barton 14-13 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon.

Brittany Kendall got the start in game one, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing seven runs before Natalie Segovis took over to throw the final 2.0 innings while allowing six runs.

The scoring got started early as Barton got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first, but Dodge City quickly responded with two of their own on a groundout from Samantha Montano and a sac-fly from Jordyn McDaniel to tie the game at two.

Three runs in the top of the second for Barton, gave the Cougars a three run lead. In the bottom of the third, Jade Brallier hit her first home run of the day, cutting the Barton lead to 5-3 heading into the fourth inning.

The Cougars then added two runs in the fourth and sixth more in the fifth to take a 13-3 lead. Needing to make up three runs, the Conqs were able to get one on an error, but could not get anymore as the Cougars won game one, 13-4.

Jordyn McDaniel got the start in game two and threw all 8.0 innings and allowed 13 runs with only eight of those runs being earned.

This time, the Conquistadors jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on a single from Caley Best and a groundout from Brallier. After the Cougars got one back in the top of the second, the Conqs came back with four runs in the bottom of the second. A single from Montano scored two, a single from McDaniel scored one and then Montano scored on an error by the right fielder to give Dodge City a 6-1 lead.

The Cougars would not go away quietly, scoring three runs in the very next inning on a double and a single to cut the lead to 6-4. In the bottom of the third, Dodge City was able to get one run, but the Cougar bats then got hot as they scored five in the top of the fourth to take their first lead of the game, 9-7.

Not letting the momentum get away from them, Brallier crushed her second home run of the day, this time a two-run shot to quickly regain the lead, 10-9. After two scoreless innings, the Cougars took an 11-10 lead in the top of the seventh.

With two outs in the seventh and Brittney Gonzalez on third, Montano hit a groundball to the shortstop who could not make the play as Gonzalez scored to tie the game and send it to the eighth inning.

The Cougars took the lead one more time in the top of the eighth on a two-run home run, but the Conqs would not let this one get away. The Conqs got the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the eighth. A walk to Evone Garcia cut the lead to one and a groundout from Best tied the game once again. This time Dodge City was able to finish it as Montano then singled to a diving second baseman to score Garcia and give Dodge City the 14-13 win.

Dodge City is now 12-24 on the year and 5-13 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Wednesday as they travel to Seward County for a doubleheader beginning at 3 and 5 p.m.
