Conqs Walk-off in Game Two to Split With Pratt

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - After falling just short in game one, 12-11, the Conquistadors came from behind with some late inning heroics to defeat Pratt on a walk-off by a score of 13-12.

Carter Hogan started game one, throwing 4.0 innings and collecting five strikeouts while allowing six runs, four of which were earned. Taylor Lepard and Eric Lindsay finished out the game, with Lepard allowing two runs on three hits and Lindsay allowing two runs on one hit, with only one run being earned.

Both Griffin McBride and Colton Talton went 3-for-4 in game one, with one of Talton's hits being a grand slam to collect four of his five RBI.

The Beavers got on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. The Conqs responded well, as they scored three runs in the bottom half on a single from Onstott, a fielder's choice from Dauson Tate and a single from Cooper Shearon to take a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the second, the Beavers scored another run, this time on an inside-the-park home run to cut the lead to 3-2. Dodge City would not give in, scoring six runs in the very next half inning. McBride led off the inning with a home run to left field and was quickly followed up by a single from Blake Rast who advanced to second on an error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sac-fly from Brayden Cook. After loading the bases with two outs, Colton Talton came to the plate and crushed a ball over the wall for a grand slam to give Dodge City a 9-2 lead in just the second inning.

After a scoreless third inning, three hits and a walk to start the fourth inning came back to bite the Conquistadors as the Beavers scored three runs in the inning to cut the lead to 9-5. Pratt then scored two runs in the fifth and five more runs in the sixth to take a 12-9 lead into the seventh inning.

Down by three runs in the seventh, a leadoff walk to Tate and a double from Shearon put runners on second a third with no outs in the inning. A groundout from Talton then scored a run to cut the lead to 12-10. McBride then hit a single to score another run, but a groundout to third base ended the game and gave Pratt a 12-11 win in game one.

In game two, Jonny Chavez got the start and threw a strong 7.1 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out seven batters. Mahlyk Davis then entered the game and threw 0.2 innings before Jake English took over. English could not collect an out and was replaced by Griffin McBride who threw the final inning and received the win in the game.

Four Conqs had at least two hits in game two with Talton and Garrett McGowan collecting three hits in the game, but the story of the game was the two hits from Engle as he drove in seven runs on an inside-the-park grand slam and an inside-the-park three run home run.

Pratt was able to score first again in game two, scoring one run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, the Beavers added to their lead with a three-run home run to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Conqs had their big inning, as McGowan stroked a single to score Tate to cut the lead to 4-1. After back-to-back hits from Tanner White and Garrett Allen scored a run, the bases were loaded and Cade Engle crushed a ball to center field. With an injury causing the right fielder to get the ball, Engle was able to come all the way around to score and give Dodge City a 6-4 lead.

Pratt would not let the Conqs gain any momentum as they quickly scored two runs in the top of the next inning to tie the game at six. Then in the top of the sixth, a solo home run gave the Beavers a 7-6 lead. Shearon then went deep to left field in the bottom of the seventh and tied the game once more at 7.

After a scoreless top of the eighth, Engle got his second inside-the-park home run of the game as he roped a ball to center that got by a diving defender and rolled all the way to the wall to give Dodge City a 10-7 lead.

The Beavers then loaded the bases on a walk, a hit by pitch and another walk with no outs to put the pressure on. Pratt then got hot and scored five runs, highlighted by a triple to take a 12-10 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

After two quick outs, Talton doubled to right-center to give Dodge City some hope. A single by McGowan and a walk to Alan Garcia then loaded the bases with two outs. Talton then scored on a passed ball and McGowan scored on another passed ball to tie the game at 12. With a runner on third, Garrett Allen then singled to right-center to score Garcia and win game two, 13-12.

Dodge City is now 22-14 on the year and 8-10 in KJCCC play. They will finish their series with Pratt on Sunday, April 8, in Pratt, Kan., at 1 and 3 p.m.
