Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - After falling behind early, the Conquistadors could not recover, as they committed five errors and fell to Lamar Community College on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 9-4.
Bryce Newsom got the start and went three full innings before handing the ball to
Aaron Duncan. Duncan then went two innings without allowing a single hit.
Tyler Whalen then took over and threw two more innings without a hit.
Mahlyk Davis then threw the final two innings and allowed four runs on just two hits.
Dodge City fell behind early as they spotted the Runnin' Lopes two runs in the top of the first as the leadoff batter reached on an error than back-to-back hits gave Lamar a 2-0 lead. The Lopes then added two more to their lead in the top of the second on an error and a single.
After one more run for the Lopes in the third, Dodge City came alive, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third.
Garrett Allen led things off by reaching on an error. After stealing second,
Cade Engle singled to score Allen from second and give Dodge City their first run. After another single by Cook moved Engle to third,
Colton Onstott hit a groundball to first. With a play at the plate, Engle slid by the tag and scored to cut the lead to 5-2.
Dauson Tate then doubled down the left field line to score Cook and cut the lead to 5-3 heading into the fifth inning.
Both teams went scoreless for the next four innings until a double and another error scored a run for the Lopes to push their lead to 6-3. Dodge City responded with one run of their own in the bottom of the eighth on a double play, but could not bring it any closer. Lamar then took the wind out of Dodge City's sail in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs to extend their lead to 9-4. Dodge City then went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to lose the game, 9-4.
Dodge City is now 28-22 on the year and remain at 12-16 in KJCCC play. They will begin their last series of the year on Thursday as they travel to Cloud for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
