Offense Comes Alive as Conqs Sweep Garden City

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - Scoring 24 in two games, the Dodge City softball team swept Garden City on Wednesday afternoon by scores of 8-0 (5 innings) and 16-3 (5 innings).

Jordyn McDaniel threw complete games in both games, giving up just three hits in game one without allowing a single run. In game two, McDaniel allowed three runs, but only one run was earned.

In the bottom of the first in game one, a walk, a single and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Dodge City. After a double play quickly changed the momentum, a three straight walks to Jade Brallier, Alex Stecklein and Leslie Ortiz scored two runs and gave Dodge City an early 2-0 lead.

The Conquistadors then wasted no time adding two more in the bottom of the second as Lori Mullins led off with a single and later came in to score on a triple from Caley Best. On the very next pitch, Brallier laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Best and make it 4-0.

After a scoreless third, the Conqs kept adding to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a sac-bunt from Samantha Montano, a single from Jordyn McDaniel and an infield sac-fly from Stecklein to make it 7-0.

With the run-rule in sight, Leslie Ortiz led off with a single in the fifth. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Brooklyn Botts hit a sac-fly to center to score the run and give Dodge City an 8-0 win in game one.

After throwing so well in game one, McDaniel was back in the circle for game two. After two quick groundouts in the top of the first, an error by Dodge City kept the inning alive for Garden City. Back-to-back singles then scored two to give Garden City a 2-0 lead.

The Dodge City offense would not be denied, as they came back with four runs in the bottom of the first. Brittney Gonzalez led off reaching on an error. After Gonzalez stole second, Best singled and advanced to second on the throw to make it 2-1. Another error by the Broncbusters then tied the game at two. Before the inning was over, a double from Brallier and a single from Ortiz scored two more and gave Dodge City a 4-2 lead.

The second inning is where the Conquistadors really poured it on as they scored 10 runs on 10 hits, highlighted by a three-run home run to left with the wind blowing in by Montano to extend their lead to 14-2. In the second, the Conqs had stretches of four consecutive hits and six consecutive hits.

McDaniel helped herself out in the bottom of the fourth, as she doubled to left-center to score two runs and push the lead to 16-2. The Broncbusters were able to get one run in the top of the fifth, but a flyout and a fielder's choice ended the game and gave Dodge City the 16-3 win in game two.

Dodge City is now 14-28 on the year and 7-17 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they finish their regular season at Northwest Tech at 12 and 2 p.m. (MST).
