Box Score 2 HILLSBORO, Kan. – Getting ready for their series against Cloud this weekend, Dodge City traveled to Tabor College on Monday where they swept the Blue Jays JV by scores of 14-1 (5 innings) and 16-5 (6 innings.
Joe Milano was the starter for game one and went 4.0 innings and allowed one run on one hit while striking out seven batters for his first win of the year.
Aaron Duncan also threw a clean fifth inning for the Conquistadors.
Dodge City got things going early in game one scoring in the first two batters as
Cade Engle led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Engle then scored on a sac-fly form
Brayden Cook to make it 1-0.
The Conqs began to bust it open in the top of the second, as they got four straight hits to start the inning including doubles from
Colton Talton and
Blake Rast to score two runs and a sac-fly from Engle extended the lead to 4-0.
In the third inning, the Conqs continued to add to their lead as they scored six runs on five hits and the help of two bases loaded walks to push their lead to 10-0, heading into the bottom of the third inning. The Conquistadors only got one across in the top of the fourth inning, but it came on Talton's third home run of the season to give Dodge City an 11-0 lead.
Not collecting single hit in the bottom of the fourth, Tabor was able to scratch a run across on a wild pitch, but Dodge City responded with three in the top of the fifth on a two-run single from
Ian Garcia and a groundout from Talton.
Aaron Duncan then entered the game and got two groundouts and a popout to win game one, 14-1.
Griffin McBride started game two for Dodge City, and threw two innings without allowing a run before
Mahlyk Davis took over. Davis then threw 0.2 innings and allowed four runs on two hits, with just two of the runs being earned.
William Cain then took the mound and pitched 1.1 innings and struck out four batters.
Bryce Newsom and
Tyler Whalen then threw the final two innings, as Newsome did not allow a hit and Whalen struck out three.
Again in game two, the Conqs were able to get things going early as they put up seven runs in the first inning as they collected five consecutive hits to start the inning which was capped off later in the inning by
Garrett Allen with his third home run of the season to make it 7-0.
In the third inning, the Blue Jays were able to cut the lead to two, as they scored five runs in the inning on three hits and one error. Dodge City then responded in the top of the fourth with two runs on a
Garrett McGowan home run to push the lead back to 9-5.
A leadoff walk to
Garrett Allen in the top of the fifth came back to bite the Blue Jays when Onstott doubled to score Allen and make it 10-5. Dodge City did not want to play a full seven innings in game two as they scored six runs in the top of the sixth on five hits including three doubles from
Cooper Shearon,
Ethan Bergkamp and Onstott to make it 16-5.
Tyler Whalen then struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early and give Dodge City a 16-5 win in game two.
Dodge City is now 27-18 on the year and will be in action again on Thursday as they host Colby at 2 p.m., at Cavalier Field.
