Box Score 2 LIBERAL, Kan. – On a day that saw 64 runs and 72 hits, the Conquistadors came from behind in game two, scoring five runs in the top of the ninth to split with Seward by scores of 20-9 (6 innings) and 18-17.
Colton Onstott went 8-for-11 on the day including going 6-for-7 in game two with three doubles, a single and two home runs.
Tanner White and
Garrett McGowan had multi-hit games in game one, while
Cade Engle and
Cameron Fritz also collected four hits in game two.
Seward got on the board first in game one, as a one-out double later came around to score on a two-out single to right-center to take a 1-0 lead.
The Saints added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff walk came around to score on a single to right, the very next batter hit a three-run home run to right field to extend the lead to 5-0. By the end of the inning, the Saints added one more run on a sac-fly to push the lead to 6-0 heading into the fourth inning.
Colton Onstott led off the fourth inning with a double and
Tanner White followed with a double of his own to give Dodge City their first run of the game. After a single by
Dauson Tate,
Garrett McGowan doubled to right-center to bring in White and cut the lead to 6-2. The Conqs were not done there as
Cooper Shearon hit his ninth home run of the year to score three and cut the lead to one, 6-5.
After a leadoff double and a groundout moved the runner to third, Hogan's day was done.
Aaron Duncan then gave up a sac-fly that gave Seward a 7-5 lead. The very next batter of the inning hit a home run over the center field wall to extend the lead to 8-5 before the end of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Joe Milano entered the game and gave up a leadoff home run to make it 9-5. After the next batter reached on a walk and stole second, a single to left added another run and made it 10-5 heading into the sixth inning.
McGowan led things off in the top of the sixth with a double. After loading the bases with two outs,
Brayden Cook doubled down the left field line to score three runs and cut the lead to 10-8. A single from Onstott to right field scored another run and forced the Saints to make a pitching change, but a flyout on the very first pitch ended the inning.
Again in the bottom of the sixth, the Saints led off with a home run, but this time, it was followed up with a second home run to quickly push the lead back to 12-9. After two runners got on,
Logan Angeron entered the game and walked the first batter to load the bases with no outs.
Bryce Newsom then entered the game and after a single and a hit by pitch scored two runs, a grand slam pushed the lead to 18-9 with no outs in the sixth. Dylan Paul of Seward then hit his third home run of the game to win game one 20-9 in six innings.
Dodge City was able to get on the board first in the after Engle led off with a double, Cook followed with a walk and Onstott doubled off the wall to make it 1-0.
Dauson Tate then grounded out to second and gave Dodge City an early 2-0 lead.
A leadoff triple to start the second inning got things going for the Saints as the next batters went single, single, double and double to take a 4-2 lead. The Conqs then committed three errors for the rest of the inning as the Saints extended their lead to 7-2.
Onstott stayed hot at the plate in the third inning, hitting a one-out double. After Tate was walked, Shearon doubled off the wall to center to score Onstott, then
Cameron Fritz singled to right-center to score two and cut the lead to 7-5.
The Conqs commited two more errors in the bottom of the third inning to help the Saints to six more runs, making their lead 13-5 after just three innings. Dodge City then came back with one in the top of the fourth on a single from Onstott and an error by the second baseman to cut the lead to 13-6.
Shearon and Fritz then led off the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles. After a pitching change and an error to load the bases, Engle singled to short to score two. Cook and Onstott then had back-to-back doubles to score three more and cut the Seward lead to 13-11.
After just the second scoreless full inning in the sixth, Onstott came to the plate with a runner on and crushed his 10
th home run of the year to tie the game at 13. Tate then reached on a hit-by-pitch and
Garrett McGowan singled to left, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double to end the inning.
In the very next half inning, Seward regained the lead as they scored four runs on four hits and an error to hold a 17-13 lead heading into the eighth inning.
Dodge City quickly got runners at first and third in the top of the eighth and no outs, but back-to-back strikeouts and a fly-out ended the inning and sent the game to the bottom of the eighth with Dodge City trailing, 17-13.
In the top of the ninth, Cook led off with a walk and Onstott followed with his second home run of the game to give the Conqs life and cut the lead to 17-15.
Garrett McGowan then singled up the middle to score Tate and
Blake Rast doubled up the middle to score two more and give Dodge City their first lead since the first inning when they led 2-0.
Eric Lindsay came back out for the bottom of the ninth. Lindsay then got a fly-out to center, a strikeout and a groundout to shortstop to end the game and complete the comeback, giving Dodge City an 18-17 win in game two.
Dodge City is now 24-17 on the year and 10-12 in KJCCC play. They will finish the series with Seward on Sunday as they host the Saints at 1 and 3 p.m.
