Box Score 2 GREAT BEND, Kan. – Despite not trailing until the 10
th inning in game two, the Conquistadors were swept by Barton Community College on Thursday afternoon by scores of 11-1 (6 innings) and 11-10 (10 innings).
Joe Buckendorff got the start in game one and threw 2.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits.
Jake Taylor then entered the game and threw the final 3.2 innings and allowed seven runs on six hits.
The Cougars held the lead throughout the entire first game, scoring four runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Cougars collected four hits in the inning with two of them being doubles and one being a two-run home run.
Barton was then able to add one in the third and one in the fourth, extending their lead to 6-0 before Dodge City was able to get on the board. In the top of the fifth,
Griffin McBride reached on an error and later came around to score on a single from
Ian Garcia to give Dodge City their only run of the game and cutting the lead to 6-1.
The Cougars quickly responded in the very next inning, scoring three runs on two hits with both hits being extra-base hits to extend their lead to 9-1. Barton was then able to add two more in the bottom of the sixth inning to reach the run-rule and give Barton the 11-1 win.
Jonny Chavez got the call in game two, throwing a strong first three innings, but then giving up two in the fourth and five in the fifth to leave the game with a no-decision.
Eric Lindsay then came in and threw 3.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits.
Mahlyk Davis threw a strong full inning and allowed zero hits. Jacob English and
Carter Hogan were the final two pitchers for Dodge City with Hogan receiving the loss.
Game two started out completely different as the Conqs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on doubles from
Colton Onstott and
Dauson Tate. After a scoreless second inning,
Tanner White led off the top of the third with a solo home run, extending the lead to 4-0.
After two doubles scored two runs for the Cougars in the bottom of the fourth, the Conqs responded with three of their own in the top of the fifth on six hits. The Cougars would not go away quietly, scoring five runs in the fifth on five hits highlighted by three consecutive extra base hits to tie the game at seven.
The Conquistadors responded well once more, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to push their lead back to three on a double from White and a single from Tate, giving him four RBI on the day. Barton was able to scratch one across in the bottom half of the inning to make it 10-8 with just three innings to play.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Cougars led off with a triple. Lindsay then got a fly-out, but was replaced by
Mahlyk Davis. Davis then got the next two batters out to get out of a jam and send the Conqs into the final inning up, 10-8.
Davis did his job in the ninth, getting the leadoff batter to ground-out and was then replaced by Jacob English. English then gave up a home run, a double and a single to score two and tie the game at 10 and send the game to extra innings.
In the 10
th inning, the Conqs went scoreless and after the Cougars loaded the bases, they were able to get a single and score one to win the game, 11-10.
The Conqs are now 9-7 on the year and 1-5 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they host Barton on Saturday to complete the series at 1 and 3 p.m.
