Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - After splitting two days on Friday and losing game one 4-2 on Saturday,
Foster Gifford took the mound for game two and threw his first complete game of the season, striking out nine to lead the Conqs to a 16-3 win in seven innings.
Gifford did not allow a single hit until the fifth inning and then allowed just three runs in the game to finish his first complete game of the season.
William Cain got the start in game one and threw 5.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits before
Taylor Lepard took over for the final 1.1 innings. In his 1.1 innings of work, Lepard did not allow a single hit and struck out one batter.
The Conqs got on the board first in game one, scoring on a double play to take an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, the Conqs gave that run back, on a single, but quickly took the lead back in the bottom of the second as a two out walk to
Cooper Shearon came around to score on back-to-back singles from
Griffin McBride and
Blake Rast.Â
Both teams went scoreless for the next two innings until two errors in the top of the fifth inning by the Conquistadors helped give the Blue Dragons three runs and a 4-2 lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the game.Â
In game two, the Conqs had two players to collect three hits as
Cade Engle went 3-for-5 with four RBI and
Dauson Tate was 3-for-3 with two RBI.
The Dodge City offense came alive quickly as Engle, Cook and Onstott all hits singles in the first inning. A fielder's choice from White and a sac-bunt from Tate plated two runs to give Dodge City a 2-0 lead.Â
The Conquistadors added to their lead in the second inning. As Engle stole second,
Colton Talton stole home to give Dodge City a 3-0 lead, and then Rast scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
With all the momentum on their side, the Conqs added four more in the bottom of the third on a single from
Alan Garcia, a double from Engle and another single from Cook to quickly extend the lead to 8-0.
After the Conqs added one more in the bottom of the fourth on a single from Rast, the Blue Dragons finally got on the board in the top of the fifth with two runs on a two-out triple to cut the lead to 8-2. The Conqs would not let the Blue Dragons keep any momentum on their side, adding six runs in the bottom of the fifth on just three hits, highlighted by doubles from McGowan and Engle to take a 15-2 lead.Â
With the wind howling straight in, Onstott got ahold of a ball in the bottom of the sixth and put it over the left-center wall to extend the lead to 16-2. The Blue Dragons got a home run of their own in the top of the seventh, but Gifford then buckled down and struck out the last two batters to win game two, 16-3 in seven innings.
Dodge City moves to 21-11 on the year and 7-9 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Monday as they travel to Otero Junior College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (MST) or 2 p.m. (CT).
