Box Score 2 HUTCHINSON, Kan. - After holding on to win game one, 11-10, the Conquistadors fell to the Blue Dragons on Friday evening by a score of 11-2 to split the day with the final two games of the series coming up on Saturday.
Colton Onstott played a big part in the Conquistador offense on Friday, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the plate in game one, with three singles and two home runs. Along with his five hits, Onstott also scored two runs and had seven RBI, setting a new career-high for RBI in a game. His previous career-high came earlier this year when he had six RBI against Luna on Feb. 26.
Carter Hogan got the start on the mound, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and collecting three strikeouts. After Jacob Taylor entered the game and did not collect an out but allowed just one hit,
Eric Lindsay entered and threw the final 2.2 innings and allowed two hits to finish the game.
After a scoreless first inning,
Blake Rast singled to score
Ian Garcia, then after a single and a walk, Onstott singled to score two more and give Dodge City a 3-0 lead. Hutchinson responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to quickly cut the lead back to one, 3-2.
In the very next inning, the Conqs seemed to have blown open the game scoring five runs in the top of the third.
Garrett McGowan started things off with a first pitch home run. Then after a walk to
Griffin McBride, a single from
Ian Garcia and another walk to Rast,
Brayden Cook scored one more run on a sac-fly. Just five pitches later, Onstott hit his first home run of the game and extended Dodge City's lead to 8-2.
In the bottom of the third, the Blue Dragons led off with a home run of their own, but that is all they would get in the inning. The Conqs then took the momentum right back in the top of the fourth as
Ian Garcia singled to score
Dauson Tate and push the lead back to 9-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Dragons got two runs on a two-run home run, and the Conqs were able to get one of those runs back in the top of the fifth on Onstott's second home run of the game to hold a 10-5 lead.
Hutchinson found a way to claw back into it in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on just three hits to tie the game at 10 with just two innings to play.
In the top of the sixth,
Cade Engle reached on a fielder's choice and after going to third on a single from Cook, scored on a single from Onstott to give Dodge City an 11-10 lead. That is all they would need, as Lindsay didn't allow another run as the Conqs held on to win game one, 11-10.
Game two was a different story as the Conqs only collected five hits in the game, with hits coming from Cook, Onstott,
Tanner White, McGowan and
Cameron Fritz.
Jonny Chavez got the start and threw six innings and allowed five runs on five hits before being replaced by
Joe Milano. Milano then gave up three runs on two hits without collecting an out and
Mahlyk Davis then entered the game. Davis then walked two and allowed one hit while collecting one out before being replaced by
Bryce Newsom. Newsom threw 1.2 innings and finished the game.
Dodge City got on the board first in the first inning on a single from White, but the Blue Dragons responded strongly in the bottom of the first with four runs.
Dodge City would score one more in the top of the second on a home run from Fritz, but that is all they would get in game two. The Blue Dragons would continue to add to their lead, scoring one in the third, four in the seventh and two more in the eighth to win game two, 11-2.
Dodge City is now 20-10 on the year and move to 6-8 in KJCCC play. They will finish their series with Hutchinson on Saturday, March 31 in Dodge City, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
