Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - After Dodge City lost game one to Garden City, 13-9, the Conquistadors were able to comeback in game two and defeat the Broncbusters by a score of 7-3 on Thursday afternoon.
Colton Onstott put on a show at the plate on the day, going 5-for-8 with three home runs, and driving in seven runs.
Tyler Whalen got the start in game one and threw just two innings and allowed five runs on four hits before the Conqs went to
Bryce Newsom. Newsom threw 1.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits.
Mahlyk Davis and
Joe Milano were the other Conqs to pitch in game one as Davis threw 1.2 innings and Milano threw 2.0 full innings.
A double in the first inning gave Garden City a 1-0 lead, but in the bottom of the first, Onstott got the Conqs on the board with a two-run home run to left field, giving Dodge City a 2-1 lead.
In the very next inning, the Busters were able to add two more runs on a single and an error to quickly take the lead back, 3-2. Dodge City then went scoreless in the bottom of the second and the Broncbusters scratched across three more on a two-run home run and a single to extend their lead to 6-2.
With all the momentum on Garden City's side, Dodge City found a way to get three runs in the bottom of the third on a
Tanner White three-run home run. Unfortunately, the Broncbusters responded well in the top of the fourth inning scoring six runs and quickly pushing their lead back to 12-5.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Conqs were able to collect four runs, highlighted by another two-run shot from Onstott to make it 12-9, but that is the closest the Conqs would get as the Busters added one more in the top of the sixth to win game one, 13-9.
Jonny Chavez got the call for game two, throwing a strong 5.2 innings and striking out a season-high eight batters while allowing just two runs.
Jake Taylor then entered the game and allowed no runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Eric Lindsay then came in for the final inning and allowed one run, but stopped GArden City there.
Dodge City got things started early in the first inning, scoring two runs on a double from
Brayden Cook and a sac-fly from
Tanner White to take an early 2-0 lead. The Conqs then added to that in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs on three hits including a triple from
Ian Garcia and Onstott's third home run of the day, this time a three-run no doubter to make it 7-0.
In the top of the third, the Busters got on the board with a two-run home run to cut the lead to 7-2. From there, the game became a pitching battle as both teams went scoreless for the next five innings. In the three innings that Taylor pitched in, the Broncbusters had runners in scoring position in all three of them, but Taylor buckled down and got out of the inning unharmed each time.
In the top of the ninth, Garden City scratched a run across, but that is all they would get as Dodge City won game two, 7-3.
The Conqs are now 15-9 on the year and 3-7 in KJCCC play. They will finish their series with the Broncbusters in Garden City on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
