Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. – Scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two, the Conquistadors walked off on the Cougars to split the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon by scores of 12-3 and 6-5.
After the Cougars opened up the scoring in the first inning on zero hits, the Conqs responded in the bottom half of the first with three runs of their own.
Cade Engle led off the game with a double and an error brought him around to score. Later in the inning,
Dauson Tate singled to score two and make the score, 3-1.
The Cougars were able to cut the lead to one on a wild pitch in the top of the third and then took the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 5-3 lead.
Again in the fifth inning, Barton was able to keep the offense going, scoring three more runs on four hits and extended their lead to 8-3.
For the third straight inning, the Cougars were able to score three runs, pushing their lead to 11-3 on three hits and one error. Barton was able to add one more in the seventh inning to push the lead to 12-3 and sat the Conqs down in order in the bottom of the seventh to win game one, 12-3.
In game two, Gifford held the Cougars scoreless in the first inning and the Conqs were able to get three runs.
Brayden Cook scored on a balk and then Tate followed it up with a sac-fly to score Onstott. Before the end of the inning,
Garrett McGowan hit a ground-rule double to give Dodge City their third run of the inning.
With two outs in the top of the second, the Cougars got on the board with a solo home run to cut the lead to 3-1.
Dodge City was able to get that run back in the bottom of the third. After Onstott doubled, Tate singled to right field and scored Onstott to make it 4-1.
After two full scoreless innings, the Cougars scratched two runs across on a triple and a fielder's choice to cut the Conquistador lead to 4-3.
In the top of the seventh, the Cougars were able to get one run on a double, but the second run was cut down at the plate on a great relay from the Conqs to keep the score tied at four.
Barton got a triple into the right field corner in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 lead, but trying to score another run on a fly-out to right, White cut down the runner at the plate and sent the game into the bottom of the ninth with Dodge City trailing by one, 5-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Conqs got the bases loaded with one out. An error to the second baseman tied the game at five and an error on the very next batter by the shortstop gave Dodge City a 6-5 win in game two.
The Conqs are now 10-8 on the year and 2-6 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Tuesday as they host Otero Junior College at 1 and 3 p.m.
