Conqs Get Swept in Home Opener vs. Butler

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan - Only holding the Grizzlies scoreless in four innings, the Conquistadors were swept by Butler Community College in two games on Thursday by scores of 7-4 and 22-18.

Jonny Chavez got the start in game one, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs. Jacob Taylor then threw the final 2.2 innings and allowed no runs.

The Grizzlies were able to score two runs in the first inning and one run in the second inning of game one to take a quick 3-0 lead over the Conquistadors. In the bottom of the second, Garrett McGowan was able to hit a one-out double to get things going. After a walk, back-to-back doubles from Ian Garcia and Garrett Allen scored three for Dodge City. An error by the Grizzlies added one more run and gave Dodge City a 4-3 lead heading into the top of the third.

The Grizzlies took no time tying the game as a leadoff home run did just that in the top of the third. Just two batters later, Butler hit another home run to take a 5-4 lead. Dodge City went scoreless for the rest of the game and Butler was able to add one run in the fourth and one run in the fifth to win the game 7-4.

Neither team could stop the other team's offense in the second game, as both teams combined for 40 runs. The Conqs had seven different pitchers throw in game two as they combined to allow 22 runs on 18 hits.

The Grizzlies took no time getting things going in game two as Patrick Bethea took the second pitch of the game over the left field wall to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, the Conqs took the lead on a two-run single from Dauson Tate.

After holding the Grizzlies scoreless in the top of the second, the Conqs added two more in the bottom of the second on a leadoff homerun from McGowan and a sac-fly from Garrett Allen.

The top of the third is where Butler poured it on, scoring six runs on five hits, highlighted by a leadoff triple, making the score, 7-4. In the bottom half, the Conqs were able to get one back on a homerun from Colton Onstott, but the Grizzlies quickly added three more in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 10-5.

The Conqs went scoreless in the bottom half then allowed five more runs in the top of the fifth to give Butler a 15-5 lead. After scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth on Onstott's second home run of the game, the Conquistadors were then able to score six runs in the bottom of the sixth with doubles coming from Cooper Shearon, Cade Engle and Onstott. Tate also homered in the inning to cut the lead to 16-13.

Just when it looked like the Conqs had the momentum, the Grizzlies put up four runs in the seventh and two more runs in the ninth to seemingly put the game away. Dodge City would not go down easy in the bottom of the ninth, four consecutive two-out hits, highlighted by a homerun from Engle to cut the lead to four. A strikeout ended the game and gave Butler the 22-18 win.

The Conqs are now 7-4 and 0-2 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they travel to Butler to finish the series at 1 and 3 p.m.
