Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Scoring 27 runs on the day, the Conquistador baseball team swept Luna Community College on Monday by scores of 18-7 and 10-8.
The Conqs had five players collect at least two hits in game one, with
Colton Onstott collecting three hits and six RBI.
The Conqs got on the board early after three of the first five batters were hit by pitches and a single by
Griffin McBride was able to give Dodge City a 1-0 lead. The Rough Riders were then able to get that run back in the bottom of the first with a two-out triple with one on.
The Conqs took control in the top of the second, scoring six runs, highlighted by a three-run home run by McBride for his second hit of the day and fourth RBI of the game.
Dodge City continued to add to their lead for the third and fourth innings, scoring two runs in the third on two hits and then scoring one more in the fourth on two hits to make it 10-1.
With all momentum on Dodge City's side, Luna was able to get three runs back in the bottom of the fourth on just one hit to quickly cut the lead to 10-4.
After Dodge City added two more in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run from
Cooper Shearon, the Rough Riders came right back, scoring three of their own in the bottom half of the inning to bring it back to 12-7.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Conqs were able to add four runs and cut away all momentum that the Rough Riders had. After the Rough Riders got one back in the bottom of the sixth, the Conquistadors did the same in the top of the seventh to give Dodge City a 17-8 win in game one.
Game two started with some fireworks as
Ian Garcia and
Garrett Allen went for back-to-back home runs to quickly give Dodge City a 2-0 lead. The Rough Riders also scored in the first inning, getting one run back as a leadoff single came around to score on a sac-fly.
Adding one in the second on a sac-fly from Garcia and one in the third on a groundout, the Conqs quickly added to their lead, making it 4-1.
The Rough Riders would not go away quietly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a triple and a groundout to cut the lead to one, 4-3.
It took until the sixth inning for the Conqs to score again, but they made it well worth it as they added a four spot in the top of the sixth on doubles from
Garrett McGowan and
Blake Rast and another home run from Garcia, making that his second of the game.
After adding two more runs in the top of the seventh on a home run from McGowan, the Conqs seemed to have the game under control, leading 10-3.
But the Rough Riders would not give in as the Conquistadors committed three straight errors then allowed two singles, a wild pitch and another error to let Luna Community College cut the lead to 10-8. But the Conqs were able to get a strikeout and a groundout to end the game and win, 10-8.
The Conqs are now 7-2 on the year and will open up conference play with their home opener on Thursday, March 1, as they host Butler Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
