Box Score 2 GOODWELL, Okla. – The Dodge City Community College baseball team opened up play on Monday afternoon, sweeping Oklahoma Panhandle State JV in two games by scores of 21-3 and 12-7.
Jonny Chavez,
Carter Hogan,
Tyler Whalen, Jacob Taylor and
Jake English combined to give up just five hits and three runs in seven innings on the mound in game one.
Dodge City also had 10 different players collect hits in game one, with
Cade Engle,
Cameron Fritz,
Garrett Allen and
Colton Onstott having multi-hit games. Onstott went 3-for-4 in the game, driving in four runs.
Things got started quickly in game one after Engle got on with a leadoff walk and quickly stole second base. After a double from
Colton Onstott scored Engle from second,
Tanner White sent his first home run of the year over the wall to give Dodge City a 3-0 lead at the end of the top of the first.
The second inning is where the Conqs poured it on, adding three runs early in the inning without collecting a single hit. By the end of the inning, the Conqs had racked up 11 runs on five hits with hits coming from
Britt Logan,
Griffin McBride, Allen, Engle and Onstott.
After a scoreless third inning, Dodge City added two more runs in the top of the fourth as Onstott brought home Allen on a sac-fly and Cook scored on a wild pitch. At the end of the top of the fourth, the Conqs lead, 16-0.
Adding three runs in the fifth, the Conquistadors scored on a bases loaded walk to score one and a bases loaded double to Onstott that scored two and made the score 19-0. A two-out triple by Engle scored one in the sixth, followed by a single by
Blake Rast extended the Conquistador lead to 21-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff triple scored two pitches later on a wild pitch, to end the shutout bid and cut the lead to 21-1. The Aggies were then able to add two more runs on a two-run home run to make the Conqs' lead to 21-3.
Jake English then struck out the final batter of the game to win, 21-3.

Garrett McGowan all pitched in game two, allowing eight hits and seven runs in the game.
In game two,
Griffin McBride led the way with two hits in five at-bats, while driving in four runs.
Ian Garcia and Onstott also had multi-hit games.
Onstott was able to get things going again for Dodge City in game two as he came around to score on a double from White to make it 1-0. In the bottom half of the inning, the Aggies quickly tied it back up at one, scoring on an error. By the end of the first inning, the Aggies had taken a 5-1 lead.
In the second inning, the Conqs were able to get two runs back, scoring on a single and a double play to cut the lead to 5-3. In the very next inning, The Conquistadors added three runs, highlighted by a double from
Griffin McBride that scored two and gave the lead back to Dodge City, 6-5.
Dodge City was able to keep the scoring going in the fourth inning as White hit a sac-fly to extend the Conquistadors' lead to 7-5. After two scoreless innings, the Conqs were able to tack on five more in the top of the seventh to make it 12-5. The Aggies were able to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh but could not cut into the lead anymore as the Conquistadors won, 12-7.
"For our first time out, I thought we swung it pretty well," head coach
Phil Stephenson said. "Some of our pitchers made a couple mistakes but with the temperatures being 20 degrees less than what they were supposed to be, I thought we did pretty well. We have some things that need corrected, but we will work on them and be ready to play Thursday."
The Conqs are now 2-0 on the year and will be in action again on Feb. 22, as they travel to Portales, N.M. to take on Eastern New Mexico JV at 2 p.m. (MST).
