Conqs Sweep North Platte, 10-8 and 9-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - After coming from behind in game one, the Conquistadors carried their momentum into game two as they swept North Platte on Sunday afternoon by scores of 10-8 and 9-1 (5 innings).

Jordyn McDaniel got the start in the circle for game one, throwing three innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits before handing the ball to Brittany Kendall. Only four of the seven runs McDaniel allowed were earned. Kendall then threw the final four innings, giving up just four hits and allowing one run which was not earned.

On the offensive side, the Conqs had three players collect three hits, including Brittney Gonzalez, Brooklyn Botts and Jade Brallier. Samantha Montano was the only other Conquistador with a mult-hit game with two hits in four at-bats.

Things didn't start out so hot for Dodge City as they allowed four runs in the top of the first on just four hits and one error. The Conqs then were able to get just two hits in the next two innings to head to the third trailing, 4-0.

In the top of the third, the Knights were able to add three more runs to extend their lead to 7-0 on three hits and another error.

The Conquistadors' bats came alive in the bottom of the third, as Gonzalez doubled to start the inning. The very next batter, Botts tripled to deep right-center to give Dodge City their first run of the game. After back-to-back outs, McDaniel helped herself out, hitting a ground ball to second to score Botts from third. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs, Emily Stephenson smoked a ball back up the middle to score two runs and cut the Knights' lead to 7-4.

The Knights were able to get their final run of the game in the top of the fourth to push their lead back to 8-4, but the Conquistadors responded in the next half inning, scoring two of their own on Gonzalez and Montano came around to score, both reaching on singles.

After a scoreless inning and a half, the Conquistadors got four straight hits to start the bottom of the sixth with hits coming from Gonzalez, Botts, Montano and McDaniel. With Dodge City now leading, 9-8, Caley Best hit a one-out double to score McDaniel and give Dodge City a 10-8 lead.

Kendall then finished the game off with three ground-outs to receive her first win of the year, 10-8.

Natalie Segovia got the nod for game two as she threw a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits.

Collecting 11 hits in the game, Every Conquistador in the starting lineup except one got at least one hit with Montano, McDaniel and Brallier having two hits.

The hot bats carried over into game two, as Gonzalez singled to start the bottom of the first. After stealing second, Gonzalez then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Botts then doubled and later came around to score on back-to-back singles from McDaniel and Brallier.

The third inning is where the Knights scored their only run. After back-to-back hits to lead off the inning, a single to center looked to score a run, but a great relay by Gonzalez, Botts and Best got the runner at the plate. But a lapse in focus allowed for the runner who advanced to third score with nobody covering home.

The Conquistadors responded well in the very next half inning as there were five hits and walk before the Conqs made their first out, tacking on four runs. Before the end of the inning, the Conqs added three more runs on a sac-fly from Gonzalez and a double from Montano to extend their lead to 9-1.

After going three-up three-down in the fourth, the Knights were able to get the leadoff batter on in the top of the fifth trying to keep the game alive. The very next batter hit a hard line drive right back at the pitcher, but it found Segovia's glove who doubled off the runner at first base. After a groundout to shortstop, the Conquistadors won, 9-1.

The Conqs are now an even 2-2 on the year and look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday as the host McCook Community College at 1 and 3 p.m.
