Colby Sweeps Dodge City on Friday Night

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - After ending their winning streak on Wednesday, the Conq volleyball team fell again on Friday night, losing to Colby Community College in three sets by scores of 23-25, 21-25 and 29-31.

Jaylen Pegues led the Conqs, collecting another double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs while Rachel Slattery was able to add nine. Gabriella Valdez collected 26 assists on the night and also had eight digs. 

In game one, the Conqs were able to take a 5-3 lead over Colby after two attacking errors by the Trojans. Later on in the set, the Conqs went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 11-5. With the Conqs leading 16-9, Colby went on a 6-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 16-15. The Trojans eventually tied the game at 18 before taking the lead on a kill by Brennah Gaston. Dodge city was able to grab the lead one last time on a kill from Kate Warren to make it 22-21, but A service ace by Colby took the lead back. Back-to-back kills by the Trojans ended set one, giving Colby a 1-0 lead.

In set two, the Trojans led throughout, getting an early 12-8 lead and forcing Dodge City to call a timeout. The Conqs were able to tie the set five more times throughout the set, but were unable to grab a lead, falling in set two, 25-21.

In set three, the Conqs showed a lot of heart, not shying away from being down 2-0. For the first time all match, the Conqs took the first point of the game. Both teams then traded points until back-to-back kills by Colby's Karleeann Ramos pushed the Colby lead to 12-9. The Conqs did not give up, fighting back and eventually taking a 20-18 lead late in the set. The Conqs then had back-to-back attacking errors that tied the game at 21. Both teams traded points once more until the game was tied at 29. A kill by Colby and an attacking error by the Conqs proved fatal as the Conqs fell in set three, 31-29 and lost the match, 3-0.

The Conqs are now 15-9 on the year and will be in action again on Monday, Oct. 2, as they host Seminole State College and Sterling College JV at 3 and 7 p.m., inside the Student Activity Center.
