Long Ball Derails DC3 Baseball At No. 14 Hutchinson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUTCHINSON, Kan. - A walk-off home run in game one followed by three home runs in game two, the Dodge City Community College baseball team dropped a 6-5 and 13-5 doubleheader to No. 14 Hutchinson Community College at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson, Kansas on Sunday, April 9th.

DC3 is now 23-13-1 overall and drops to 12-8 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Blue Dragons improved to 30-11 overall and 18-6 in the KJCCC.

After being held scoreless in a doubleheader yesterday against HCC, the Conquistadors would again find themselves in an early hole as the Bluedragons would put up two runs in the bottom of the first on a one-out wild pitch and RBI single.

Dodge City's first run of the weekend would come in the top of the second, as the first three DC3 batters of the inning would collect hits with Richard Fullerton driving home Dauson Tate to cut the lead to 2-1. A Cole Bergdall two-RBI double would bring home Gavin Gifford and Fullerton before Bergdall would be brought home on a Cade Engle RBI single to put the Conquistadors up 4-2.

Hutchinson would pull even at four with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second as the bats would go quiet for the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

With the game still knotted at four, Brayden Cook would lead off the inning with a double before a Jake Pederson flyout would move the DC3 second baseman to third and 90 feet away from scoring the go-ahead run. On a 2-2 count and two outs in the inning, HCC pitcher Zach Moore would throw a wild pitch and allow for Cook to race home to put Dodge City up by a score of 5-4 with a chance to steal a game and series momentum heading into game two.

A one-out single followed by a strikeout would put DC3 just an out away from a win when the Blue Dragons would pull the floor out from underneath the Conquistadors by hitting a walk-off home run on a 1-0 count over the center field fence as Dodge City would be handed the heart-breaking loss.

Dalton Harvey would take the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season as DC3 would collect as many hits in the game as yesterday's doubleheader loss. Pederson would lead the Conquistadors with a two hits in the game while Bergdall had two runs batted in.

Game two saw Dodge City take a 1-0 lead just half an inning in with a Talon Schaller RBI double to drive in Engle, but the lead would be short-lived as the Blue Dragons once again put up two runs in the bottom of the first.

Four straight hits by HCC in the bottom of the second which included a solo home-run would be part of a four-run inning to give the Blue Dragons a 6-1 lead after two before another two runs would be plated in the bottom of the third.

An Engle RBI single to drive in Eric Reid in the top of the fifth would pull DC3 back within six runs at 8-2 before Dodge City would put two runs on a Tate two-run homerun in the top of the sixth to give DC3 some momentum heading into the final three innings.

Pederson would drive in Engle on a one-out groundout in the top of the seventh to make the score 8-5, but Hutchinson would score four runs by hitting two more home runs in the bottom of the seventh and add a run in the bottom of the eighth while holding DC3 scoreless down the stretch.

Cole Brandon (4-2) would go 2.1 innings and take the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits while striking out one. Schaller would rebound with a three-for-five day at the plate with one RBI while Engle had two hits and scored twice.

Dodge City will have a busy week heading into Easter, starting with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against the Tabor College JV team on Wednesday, April 12th. Earlier this year, DC3 won by scores of 9-3 and 6-2 in Hillsboro to sweep the Bluejays.
