Kim Herron, the Dodge City Community College softball team picked up two much needed wins over rival Garden City Community College with a 9-1 (5 inn.) and 6-2 victory in Garden City on Wednesday, March 8th.
DC3 is now 14-6 overall and have won five of their last six games while Improving to 4-2 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. The Lady Broncbusters fall to 11-15 overall and 0-4 in the KJCCC.
Dodge City picked up all the run support that they would need in game one in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs before tacking on a single run in the third, three runs in the fourth, and two runs in the fifth.
Kylie Fox would lead off the game with a line-drive home run over the left field fence before a
Brittney Gonzalez single and stolen base would put a runner in scoring position.
Taylor Menard would advance Gonzalez and
Adreanna Guerrero, who managed to get on base after being hit by a pitch, on a groundout to the GCCC second-baseman allowing for Herron to hit a two-RBI single. Garden City's first inning would see a leadoff single put to waste as Herron would shut down the Broncbusters with three consecutive strikeouts to end the inning. DC3 would leave a runner on in the top of the second before allowing just one base runner in the bottom half of the inning on a one-out walk. Back to work on the offensive end of things, Menard would take advantage of an error to get on base before once again coming around to score as Herron would hit an RBI double to the left center field gap. Garden City would threaten in the third inning and push across their only run of the game by putting together a pair of singles and taking advantage of one DC3 error to cut into the deficit to trail 4-1 after three innings. The Conquistadors would break the game open in the fourth by putting their first five batters on base and pushing across three runs and take a commanding 7-1 lead. A two-out walk would be all that GCCC would muster in the fourth, allowing DC3 to add on to their lead in the top of the fifth by pushing across two runs to potentially end the game early via the run rule. Dodge City would not waste the opportunity given to them, allowing just one hit in the bottom of the fifth before ending he game on a pop out and strike out to take the victory.
Tegtmeier would drive in three runs in the game despite going just one-for-four from the plate while Fox would go two-for-three at the plate with a pair of extra-base hits. Herron would collect two hits in three at bats and drive in three runs, collecting the win on the rubber by throwing four innings and giving up just one run on three hits and striking out six.
Game two would get off to a slower start as three scoreless innings would be played by both teams before the Conquistadors would put up three runs in the top of the fourth. Garden City would close the gap to 3-2 in their half of the fourth before DC3 would put up single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings and hold the Broncbusters scoreless down the stretch. With a total of just three hits recorded in the first three innings of play, Dodge City would finally get the bats going in the top of the fourth by stringing together three consecutive one-out hits to starting with a Guerrerro double. Menard would follow-up with a single to right field to score Guerrero on an error by the GCCC right fielder before Herron would bring home Menard with a single of her own. Garden City would manage three hits of their own in the bottom of the fourth to push across two runs as DC3 would hold a one run lead heading into the final three innings of play. Having batted around in the fourth, DC3 would once again get run support from Herron at the plate with Menard reaching base on a two-out error before a double to left field would bring her in to make the score 4-2 in favor of Dodge City. The Broncbusters would be retired in order in the bottom of the fifth. A
Baylee Rial lead off triple in the top of the sixth would allow for
Breanna Guerrero to bring her home and tack on another run for the Conquistadors and gain some breathing room just six outs away from a doubleheader sweep. GCCC would be held scoreless again in the sixth before a nearly identical start to the seventh would occur as Adreana Guerrerro would hit a lead off triple to allow for Menard to drive her home on a groundout to the second baseman. Herron would then close the game out on the mound by retiring the final three Broncbusters in order.
Adreanna Guerrero would collect two hits and score two runs as Herron would once again carry the big bat by going three-for-four and driving in two runs. The Shawnee, Oklahoma native would also go the distance on the mound, striking out eight and giving up two runs on five hits.
An abbreviated spring break trip will be next in store for the Conquistadors, who will next be in action on Monday, March 13th at North Arkansas College in Harrison, Arkansas. DC3 is scheduled to play the Pioneers and Blackburn College in a pair of doubleheaders over the two-day trip.
