Conqs Drop Another Close Game at Home, 84-78

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Free throws were the story for the Conquistadors on Saturday afternoon as they went 23-for-43 from the free throw line in their 84-78 loss to Butler Community College.

Ishawn Murphy led Dodge City in scoring on Saturday, collecting a career-high 19 points in the game. Justice Dixon, Hunter Davis and Jyrus Freels also scored in double figures with Davis grabbing a team-high four rebounds.

Dodge City was not able to score for the first four minutes of the game until Murphy knocked down his first shot of the game. Murphy and Freels then were able to get back-to-back shots to drop to tie the game at six with 13:32 to play. In the next two minutes, Butler went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 14-6.

Dodge City then followed with their own run, scoring the next 12 points to take a 18-14 lead. Butler then came roaring back to grab a 12 point lead with just over a minute to play in the half. Dixon was then able to find Murphy behind the three-point line who knocked down the shot with three seconds left to send the Conquistadors into the locker room trailing 43-36.

The second half was a battle at both ends of the court as both teams traded baskets for the first 10 minutes. After the Grizzlies were able to add to their lead and make it 78-65, the Conqs decided it was time to make a run. Murphy could not miss as hit knocked down back-to-back three pointers, then followed it up with a layup to cut the lead to four with two minutes to play.

With the Conqs down by three with 1:11 left the play, the Dodge City defense turned up the pressure, collecting a steal and getting a layup to cut the lead to one. On the very next possession, Murphy got a steal, but on the fastbreak, the Conqs turned the ball over. Butler then took full advantage of the turnover, scoring the final five points to win, 84-78.
